The western centric selection of launch titles didn't do this thing any favors in Japan. They should have waited for a better selection of Japanese titles before hitting Japan.
The funny thing about most of the Nintendo titles on that list are that they don't really cater to any particular region of the world. They're generally universally loved just about everywhere.
Again, this is factually incorrect.
Perhaps, PSVita did not have strong IPs or AAA titles during its launch (which is something quite normal, and PSP with a smaller, though similar, line-up did way better than PSVita), but it DID have a Japanese centric selection of titles.
PSVita was released on December 17, 2011 with 26 titles; 6 were only digital, while the remaining were released both digitally and on PSVita cards. Among them,
only 5 games were from Western developers (maybe I am missing one or two, but the point still holds). 5 games out of 20 is just 1/4.
3/4 of Japanese launch PSVita line-up were from Japanese developers. And there were pretty strong IPs on Sony ecosystesms, such as Dynasty Warriors, Ridge Racer and Disgaea; there was the sixth entry of Minna no Golf, which sold pretty well on both PSP and PS3, though on decline with respect to PS2 episodes. There were RPG of any kind: Disgaea 3, Lord of Apocalypse, Army Corps of Hell (the latter were directly from Square Enix... And it is not so common to have Square Enix titles for the launch of a new console); there were also two fighting games, a visual novel, an exclusive dating-sim-or-something (Dream Club), Katamary Damacy, which is surely pretty well-known in Japan, and a typical Japanese gaming experience.
So, I would not say that PSVita had a
Western centric launch line-up, because it is not true.
It's already losing game support. You can't look at E.X. Troopers, which just got a reveal from Capcom, and not realize they would rather up-Rez the game and release it on the PS3, rather than release it on the Vita (which is where it was probably originally supposed to land).
Actually, I'm pretty sure it was initially thought exclusively for 3DS, and then up-port to PS3. They could have chosen PSVita, though.
