Media Create Sales: Week 32, 2014 (Aug 04 - Aug 10)

I have high hopes for Zelda Musou. Licensed Musou does nutty numbers, and I think the novelty of so many Zelda characters making their first playable appearances will fudge the numbers a bit. I'm betting 90k opening with a quarter million ceiling, and I'm being foolishly optimistic.

I like this convo so I'm gonna chime in a little late.

I see Japan even in this instance as a bellweather. It may take the west longer to catch up, but the muted successes of both PS4 and One since their launches might point to just such a situation. Maybe there is just a much larger pool of dedicated game system owners? Not enough to slow the bleed to mobile environs (need to see holiday sales to see just how much interest actually exists) but One has already slowed to a crawl and PS4 has been or soon will be outpaced by Wii LTD by next summer outpaced by PS2.

Sony could sell 100 million PS4's and we'd still be looking at a hugely depressed market. If it's significantly under that you could still end up with healthy software sales for specific titles and a market viewed as unsustainable, unsupportable.

Change is definitely in the air. Very glad I don't have inputlock. I can play with a variety of disparate control methods and have a good time.

Japan isn't an indicator for anything in this situation and i dont think it has been since everyone jumped ship to the og playstation.

Ignorance of the pc and its rebound and growth started by WoW and steam almost 10 years ago is pretty noticeable. Partially understandable since this is still majority american users here but its still something i notice alot.

Europe and especially non Japan Asia seems to be practically ignored from the conversation sometimes.

I don't really see how being outpaced by the PS2 or the Wii amounts to muted success really.

That aside, I really don't see why people continually insist that Japan is a bellweather or ahead of the curve, when there isn't really anything concrete to suggest that being the case for a very long time now. There was a significant transition from home consoles to dedicated handhelds that didn't occur elsewhere; and no, I don't consider the amazing Western sales of the NDS to be equivalent to that shift, because we're talking about unlike market segments and genres in the Western market, as opposed to a movement of traditional console consumers towards handheld devices in Japan.

There's been significant change in the relevance of various publishing houses, mainly due to the rise of Western PC developers. And also in large part because of how inefficient Japanese publishers were last gen, their struggles with adapting to HD, and simply changing consumer tastes.

There are different emphases in terms of what denotes value for consumers in the different markets as well. I think a large part of the transition to handheld in Japan was due to a lesser importance of audio-visual production values, compared to the West where it's basically one of the most important aspects of a title's success these days.

Conversely, I'm not saying that mobile hasn't and isn't having a significant impact on the global gaming market.
But the world isn't following Japan to handhelds and then to mobile. It's Japan that's just following a global trend to mobile for certain consumer segments.

And as someone who is similarly fine with the occasional mobile play-session, it's difficult not to recognise the very different experiential offerings of a dedicated home console and mobile phone gaming. The market segments they serve. The consumer value drivers. There's certainly argument to be had that someone from the traditional space should be targeting those consumers with a product offering, or at least trying harder. But I think there's enough disparity remaining that they aren't sufficient substitutes yet for the traditional market.

selling less than the console leaders from the previous two generations is what really makes a difference if the ps4 is also going to be the market leader in this generation. sure, comparatively it's fine, but taking into account all the things that require games become a success on a shrunken userbase with less diversity, it's not good. it's the sort of 3ds logic you see here and in other sales thread. yeah it's clobbering the competition. no, it's not really going to offset what was lost.

So, is the Persona 4 anime really that bad?

I mean, SOA is still there, but P4G has vanished already from the charts... (Maybe it has no stock?)

It seems it was out of stock and was replenished. Maybe it might have sold more first week, but now it's too late.

So this is slightly tangential on the basis it's a Western game, but I feel it relates to the discussion that's happened here regarding trying to releasing retail-type products on mobile platforms and the economics related to that.

Skylanders is getting a $75 retail starter pack for a fully featured tablet version of Skylanders: Trap Team that's launching simultaneously with the other versions. It includes the game, the toys, and a controller. This is the same price as the starter pack for other platforms.

It works on most popular tablets, and you can download the app and play a few demo levels for free, but need to buy the starter pack to actually unlock the full game. The game also lets you do a small download up front and background download the rest in chunks if you want to start playing faster.

I think this is the first time we've seen a tablet game essentially being sold with major retailer support as a fully fledged product.

I'm curious to see if we see anyone else try something like this (besides the inevitable response from Disney Infinity).

what i think japan showed was that once everything fit into place, the transition happened really fast. the transition is a lot slower in the us, although it's already sucked up some very large chunks of the market in the us (notably the handheld gamers and non-traditional enthusiasts). even when facebook was getting big, it didn't happen at the expense of anything else.

@Nirolak, I can see Ubisoft perhaps trying something; particularly as they'll want to find something in the event that the Just Dance well completely dries up.

With regards to Japan and games as a service... I really don't see how they're at the forefront, nor how the market is transitioning faster. While I certainly think that's the direction we're heading in, I don't see what exactly in the Japanese market suggests a particularly fast transition in that regard.

If you're just talking about the rapidity of the rise of mobile, I'm not entirely sure it's any faster than in the Western markets. The more recent collapse of handhelds towards mobile likely just seems more rapid, as a more gradual transition has been masked by a concurrent transition of home console to handhelds.

I actually feel that, outside of mobile games and MMOs, the transition to service games in Japan has been surprisingly poor.

Updated games are still often sold as new physical products instead of DLC. The type of DLC sold in Japanese games is often non-substantial and/or very limited. There's rarely anything like season pass worth of content (along with the accompanying bundle option. Free game patches that do things like add new game features or notably rebalance a title are pretty rare.

It still very much feels like a market where games are shipped and then the team immediately moves on to the new one instead of a long tail of post launch support.

Now, obviously there are some exceptions and as I stated earlier, this is handled quite well on mobile or with things like MMOs, but the physical product end doesn't seem to be absorbing these ideals.

Well, aren't we starting to see a change to that? Several updated re-releases have been sold as DLC in addition to retail (for example, Bravely Default For The Sequel and Fantasy Life LINK). I haven't seen any of the hunting games do it yet, but it's happening in some way.

There certainly are some developers who do this, but the volume who don't is rather surprising.

By comparison, I can barely think of any Western developers who have done this in like the last five years.

The only one that comes to mind is Metro Redux, which including porting the first game to an entirely new engine, and it only applies to the PC where you still get a discount buying the games again.

Now that you say this, I realize this too... The closest we get to a new enhanced rerelease are the GOTY editions that includes the DLCs...

God Eater 2 apparently skipped a Burst re-release in favour of DLC. IIRC the recently released Best budget reprint includes this content.

what i think japan showed was that once everything fit into place, the transition happened really fast. the transition is a lot slower in the us, although it's already sucked up some very large chunks of the market in the us (notably the handheld gamers and non-traditional enthusiasts). even when facebook was getting big, it didn't happen at the expense of anything else.

Yep.

It wasn't until the launch of 3DS, Vita, and WiiU that we'd seen just how much of an impact this new competition was making. This seems to slowly be hitting the more traditionalist home console dedicated market as well. No platform this generation is implicitly acting like a market leader. Or what we'd expect of a market leader from the prior two generations. I don't think this is just because of the explosive start though that is likely a factor as well.

I think at this point every hardware vendor has seen what happens when you rest on your laurels.

Definitely.

Though in those three cases I'd say it's more completely ignoring emerging trends among buyers than resting on laurels. One was the drastic change in what games should cost as a product. People seem completely okay with giving up physical ownership of the software if it can be delivered really cheap. There's also the utility factor. Having all your time wasters (and that seems to be what gaming is to a large slice of the populace) in one place.

This is part of the reason I think Sony and MS are going to be hit by the change as well. Though likely to nowhere near the degree that Nintendo was. WiiU was a muddled vision endeavor definitely. But to be hit so hard? It smacks of a competitor sweeping in and taking almost all of your userbase. Deftly. Within a matter of years the audience Nintendo built was all but gone. More worryingly this other market was pulling away from their iron hold market. In some regions more than others. I don't think any of the more casual focused platforms could have made a big impact. I don't think their corporate cultures and preconceptions of what games are could change enough to have capitalized on this metric shift in consumer expectations.

Though I guess you could call that resting on laurels.

LOL. I've been telling people that in the Vita thread every time they mention "GE2Burst".

Another Episode is not included in the Best version. It's plain old GE2 that you also have to patch.

What goes up quickly can easily go down quickly. Just because you gain a new audience doesn't mean you understand that audience. When your expanded audience is actually expanded audiences it makes it that much harder to efficiently target them hence the muddled Wii U.

25-30k is my guess, which sucks for TK/Nintendo. I bet they expect at least 150k or something lol.

I don't think they have that much faith in HW.
It's just a side project that exists to fill up space; nothing more nothing less.
I imagine that there expectations for it's success are pretty low.

Isn't KT expecting it to do 1 million+ globally?

Yeah, but that's not Nintendo; the big N obviously want this game to do well and they'll try to make it do well (with incentives, branding and marketing of course), but they probably have much lower expectations than KT has for the game.
:p

Didn't KT just say that they would like the game to sell 1 million? I really doubt they are expecting to get that kind of return.

SK2. Yeesh!

.

Sony made the same mistake and now the Vita(maybe even Sony's future in portable gaming as a whole) is paying the price.

I think one reason for this is that there are different market conditions to consider. Japanese publishers would be more sensitive to market realities in Japan, where they know that while the digital download market is better now than it was before, it's still very much a retail driven industry. So there's always a feeling that they need to cater to specifically. For the international market, I think that sales results have probably shown publishers that with regards to stuff like DLC which target core fans who are still playing the game, there is no pressing need for retail until they are bundled up in a cheaper GOTY edition.

A good example is how different the market conditions are can be seen in how Capcom is releasing the RE HD Remaster. It's digital for all platforms everywhere, all over the world, while in Japan they're still unwilling to let go of retail completely on the PS3. It has a retail release, as well as an LE and an even more expensive CE.

I wonder how Forbidden Magna will do.
Rune Factory has always done well on DS/3DS, but this is a very different game, targeting a similar audience as Senran Kagura.

Poor PS4

Really needs those supposed TGS announcements.

Are people really expecting a particularly strong showing for the PS4 from Japanese developers? Seems foolish I think. If the new Yakuza they announce soon is exclusively for PS4, that might be a good sign that publishers are positive about the future of the console. If it's still PS3/PS4, then.... lol.
