According to Circana’s executive director and games industry analyst Mat Piscatella, over 70% of active PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S players in the US played at least one of the top 10 live service games in January. This includes Call Of Duty, Fortnite, Marvel Rivals, Roblox, and Minecraft.

While this isn’t too concerning in itself, Piscatella notes that over 40% of time spent playing on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S went to those same top 10 live service games – so people are playing those games, and only those games, for a significant chunk of time.

Piscatella highlights how total video game spending and total hours played in the US peaked in 2021, but the ‘pace of games being released hasn’t slowed’ since then. As such, without a growing audience of players, these live service titles are pulling a limited pool of players away from playing new games.

I've beaten 60 games and another 2 before the final boss in 2024. This year I've got a long list of 2025 games/skipped games from the last 5 to 10 years/backward compatibility games on Xbox /switch 2 since I skipped the original switch and I don't pirate emulators before owning it's games/free to play /games as a service. It's a long list. I've never pushed myself above what I'm capable on beating, I do just like what eater quest do to achieve their record numbers, by taking small steps every time I see myself able to take.

This is why it would've been fun if the poll about how many time a week Gaffers spend actually playing videogames was public.

I'm certain the vast majority of people complaining about these live service games barely even spend time playing videogames.

OT:

The reason these games are popular is in large part because they keep giving new content, how little it may be.

In fact the only games i have replayed are the recent Tomb Raider trilogy.
Once i finish a game thats it, gets uninstalled unlikely to be ever seen again.

70% of ps5/xbox gamers at least tried an online game in January.

Gotta factor the 130 million switch owners and the tons of PC gamers who play SP.

Just fighting back against all the execs that have to have gaas as their strategy

I didn't play any of those live service games last month. I did log in to Second Life for the first time in like a decade to see how it changed. It doesn't seem to have changed much at all.

Not really surprising.
Many people aren't into "gaming" as a hobby as much as they are into specific games. Their hobby isn't "playing videogames" it's "playing Fortnite" (or Cod, or Fifa or whatever).
In a way multiplayer games are more like sports (except you do it at home eating Doritos), you probably describe that friend you have that goes play Basketball 3 times a week as "being into basketball" and not just "sports".

How bittersweet.

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

Beat Saber and Walkabout Minigolf are the best games available on any VR device. Years later and I continue to get better at these two games.
Need to combine these two games into Saber Golf and VR will have it's killer app.

I imagine they play these games because it connects them to their social network. My kids and their friends prefer to game while socializing so they naturally gravitate towards those live service games. It's the digital equivalent of going to the local park to play basketball with your friends.
