Naughty Dog Announces Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

New info on the game:

Copypasta-ing from the Uzupedro ResetERA thread as I'm pressed for time TBH. Someone else can make the thread here if they want. So, details:

  • Inspired by Sierra point and click games, Monkey Island and Half Life 2 - Less handholding in the narrative, mentions a moment where you could look at Eli (in HL2) and he would wink at you, which you can miss but also memorable if you get to see it.
  • 2000 years in the future, deviates from our reality in the late 1980s
  • Druckmann jokes "we made a game with TLOU2, we made certain creative decisions that got us a lot of hate. A lot of people love it, a lot of people hated it (Garland quips "who gives a shit"). Exactly. The joke is you know what let's do something that people won't care as much about, let's make a game about faith and religion"
  • The way the alternate history comes is through a new religion being founded, which becomes proeminent in the world, the team spent years working on the universe timeline and how this religion changed throughout the years, from the original prophet, being bastardized, the evolution etc
  • Wanted to make a game about being lonely; "so many games we've done have been about there always being an ally with you, talking - really want you to be lost in a place that you're really confused about what happened here, who are the people here, what was their history"
  • No one's heard from Sempiria in 600 years, Jordan (main character) has to figure out what happened if she hopes to ever escape

Personally really liking what I'm hearing here. Those old-school Sierra point-n-clicks are some classics, and letting the environment do more of the storytelling (something Half-Life 2 did as well) while trusting the player to piece things together on their own is more than welcome.

Depending on how they handle the religious themes, it could work to the game's strengths. SMT3 Nocturne was also sci-fi/cyberpunk influenced albeit in a post-apocalyptic future, and also had some religious themes and overtones. Well, the SMT games in general tend to do that, and in a pretty cool way. I hope ND still keeps it cool even if they also want to delve into a more substantive take with it.

I am not remembering any AAA game that has faith & religion as its main plot. Not many games has the writing chops to cover it.
Maybe Doom Eternal lol
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - This is of course not AAA but just AA, but the most interesting thing is that at the same time it is also a very good game with a very interesting design and visual style, I would even say something unique. But in general the game is really built on Religion.

Well, I'm also a fan of the Emperor and I worship him wholeheartedly, but do we really want to include Warhammer 40,000 with its Inquisition in terms of religion? :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Intergalactic is set 2000 years in the future. I don't see how it's supposed to hit any closer to home than 40k's take. Naughty Dog will certainly try to make it all parallel 'woah man so deep it's just like here!' and a certain amount of the TV brained among us will probably find it really poignant.

The more I think about this game, there more I think its going to be cool as hell with Naughty Dog using these two anime masterpieces as inspiration.

Ya, I don’t give a shit if people think it’s woke. I think it looks awesome. I have yet to play a bad naughty dog game. TLOU part 2 had a mid story, but everything else with the game was S Tier.

its naughty dog. they have never not delivered.
let people talk, they didnt even play games done by ND anyway. If they had they would know that ND is pretty much the only developer that can go toe to toe with rockstar ( and i dont even like rockstar games )
Always wanted 2 type of games done by ND, one would be Pubg, another one would be a Soulborne. Maybe its time for my soulsborne. The Pubg game looks like it got cancelled ...

Wait, Garland? As in Alex Garland? Holy shit
Yes, this interview was incredible. The 2 are so in sync with their taste.

Awesome to hear how 28 Days Later inspired TLOU, and how TLOU went on to inspire Garlands upcoming 28 Years Later.
These are a couple of my fav creators ever in their perspective mediums. And was awesome to hear Druckmann say how Civil War would have made an awesome video game. We think alike. First thing I said when I saw it.

dude, I hope they nail it, but im on the pessimist side. I actually hate their pacing since uncharted 4. Both UC4 and Tlou 2 are soooo boring to me. Slooooow games with lots of talking sections and exposition. Hell I hate the semi open world of those 2 games and even remembering it right now its kinda odd they put those sections in. If they focus on gameplay and a solid story that you can digest without being interrupted, I think they can make a gem.

Yeah this “false” “fictional” religion is GUARANTEED to be soooooo “coincidentally” close to Christianity only someone like you with a single digit iq will claim otherwise
Cry harder. Its a fake religion. Nothing to do with christianity. And even so, there's nothing stopping any religion from being fairly critiqued in a fictional game. Dont play it if you cant handle it.

3 months later…. And I still don’t like the main character.
Who knows? It might have that Witcher 4 treatment were Ciri the protagonist looks much better for me, on the latest trailer, even if the developers dont want to admit that there was a redesign of the character.

I'm confident that any similarities with Christianity will be shared among all religions, but you will personally feel like it's an attack on Christianity because it's the only religion you're familiar with.

Victim mentality at its best.

Media can deconstruct themes. It's a great subject to tackle and prejudging it in a defense of any specific religion before you've seen anything is so predictable and laughable.

No doubt.

The chances of that alternate universe religion being anything close to Islam, Hindu, or Buddhist will be 0%.

But who knows. Druckmann acts brave on social media complaining about stuff over the years. And his games have no problem killing off the main character, having tons of lbgt themes and even sex romp cut scenes.

But lets see how ballsy he is when it comes to religion.

Just being ballsy and shocking wont be enough. Especially at cost of religion.

Focus more on making a coherent piece of art. Appropriate music, colour palette, tone etc.

First impressions are encouraging, music fits in nicely. Art and colour palette look decent work in progress.

Story, I feel they should make something simple. Really not a fan of try hard video game stories.

I dont even care about Cuckman dog shit ideas anymore... Im just here for the train wrack and shit show. Its going to be good.

I have minimal interest in the game myself, but just objectively speaking it is bound to be a finely crafted narrative action adventure. So what's the point in being down on it just arbitrarily? Do you watch a lot of hate farming vids on YouTube as well? Meh.

I have a feeling it's about Scientology. The cult of L. Ron Hubbard.
That this sci-fi game might lean into themes along the lines of modern cult religions of the past century seems pretty reasonable. Some people prefer to think Druckmann's comin' for their Christmas or whatever, but that just looks like pre-existing hate fuelled paranoia.

I'd be surprised if the game doesn't have rival factions or off-shoots of a belief in a common group of deities or one god and have elements of more ethereal religion-adjacent ideology insemination/population control tactics employed via tech through ritualistic use of hand-held places of worship, receiving validation akin to likes and shares, idolatry of influencers and supreme-being deity CEOs pulling the levers.
