Notch asks: should he make 'minecraft 2' or would his fans want the new IP?

Honest and legitimate request for feedback for once:

The new game I'm passionately working on is currently set to be a traditional roguelike (i.e. ADOM, nethack, etc) mixed with a tile based first person dungeon crawler (ie Legend of Grimrock (esp 2), Eye of the Beholder)

But then I gots to thinking that maybe there are people who like my work but might not share my taste in retro nostalgia and would prefer for me to make a spiritual successor thing to Minecraft, and I mean sure, I'd take that cash.

So market research.
I'd be happy to oblige either, which one would make you happier?

I think it would be more interesting to see what he's passionate about rather than making more of the same of what he thinks his audience will be looking for.
To be fair someone could probably make the game he is talking about within whatever his spiritual successor would be. In fact he could do it.

Attention whore

I don't see how a minecraft 2 would differ enough from minecraft to make it unique and worth playing. Minecraft was a flash in the pan that could never be replicated again and it should stay that way.

Kids still play the OG, so an updated version with better graphics shouldn’t have any problems selling.

Should have been made 10+ years ago cause the first game is hideous even with graphic mods.

I love the way that game looks.. ! And when all the shaders are on it looks awesome to me, but I do like the blocky style and even jaggies. Running on a literal potato is part of the game's success, though.

I mean i wouldn't mind updated graphics if there's an option to keep the OG graphics. I feel like you could do that in a free update though and keep it as part of the base minecraft game as sort of a good gesture for the massive community.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
He's already working on what he wants (for as long as he wants, like the previously ambitious but cancelled 0x10c sandbox sci fi thing), I doubt he'll change mind by any vote.

MC2 could hugely benefit from modern technology.
The java version needs dozens of mods and is over all not that great, optimization wise.
Just add all the cool mods in java mc and improve things like physics, lighting, and tools to make workflow in creative mode faster.

Notch you greedy bastard.

My man is sour he sold Mojang for $2.5B but entirely in cash.

If he’d have done even 50% in cash he’d have probably doubled his net worth given MSFT’s share price growth between then and now (given they’re one of if not the most valuable company in the world right now).

Just stay in your rich man obscurity, build your passion project and if you really care about trying to be relevant, think about building funding indies or something.

He can basically personally finance any dream game. Also a bit strange that he hasn't made his money grow at all during this time. He probably got scared when he noticed that his trajectory would lead him to lose his status as a billionaire. Guy has zero financial or economical know-how.

Looking forward to his game though, I wish it would be a mix between The Long Dark and Minecraft and yes, if someone steals this idea I want 2 billion dollars for it. In cash!

He should have taken 2.5 billion in Bitcoin.

Fascinating that he still want to create a Minecraft 2, moreover for "cash only"? I thought he was drowning in money. Either way, I'm curious to see how it will plays out, I'm not even sure he can use that IP name anymore.

Kind of genuinely curious why someone like this would need to sell-out (further) for more cash. Doesn't he already have more money than he could ever know what to do with? I am guessing this is more of an "I'm bored now, I want attention" (not to hate on that either, mind you).

Anyway I never fell in with Minecraft (I am an old man) so I don't have a horse in this race. Notch's story has been an interesting one regardless. He could (further) change the industry in unexpected ways, if so desired, and he realizes this. I hope he does do something to push the needle in some direction, as he is a special case & represents one of those outsider devs who has had a massive impact in the modern industry. We do need more of those. Badly.

Honestly theres enough Roguelikes, and way too many that basically play the same or lack any real innovation.
Now despite what contrarians will say, Minecraft was innovative, so a successor could really build on it, add more sim elements etc. So yeah that sounds better.

"I'd take that cash"

Dude is already a billionaire, but I guess that's not enough.

What a pathetic human being. Just make your passion project. Craving even more money?
I just don't understand this mentality of hating on successful people. I don't know anything about Notch as a person nor do I care but, the fact that one dude made something that millions of people across the world adore and this creation allowed him to cash out should be a source of inspiration imo, not one of disdain.

Impressive, the more I try to read his tweets, the less sense it makes.

Also explains a lot of the generation that grew up playing his game.

Feel free about not understanding it then

I respect his creation. Minecraft is important. I'm not hating him for being successful. My thoughts about his creation has nothing to do with what I think of him as a person. Plenty of jerks have created masterpieces.

I think its pathetic that he seems to be making it for (more) money, since he doesn't need it and would probably be happier focusing on a passion project.

And I have more than enough reasons for calling him pathetic. See below for a small taste of what he already expressed in social media over the years. Dude is weird.

Getting rich was probably the worst thing that ever happened to this guy. Whiney old bitch.
