PlatinumGames‘ Hideki Kamiya has apologised to players and Microsoft for the events that led to the cancellation of Scalebound.

The action RPG was originally planned as an Xbox exclusive in 2017, but the game was eventually cancelled. In a new video on the Cutscenes YouTube channel, Kamiya explains how Scalebound came to be and why it was eventually scapped.

“Scalebound was a project we had teamed up on with Microsoft,” Kamiya explains. “They expected good things from us, and we needed to live up to those expectations with the project. Teaming up with Microsoft meant releasing the game on the latest Xbox console [the Xbox One]. I once again had the desire to make a high-end game. I wanted to go back to something photorealistic. While it was a personal wish of mine, I thought it was also a necessary mission for PlatinumGames to improve our graphical ability and get to the next step of modern game creation. So we first decided to go with a universe like that.

“I loved fantasy worlds since I was a child. I’ve always enjoyed worlds with swords, magic, and dragons. When I was a child, I don’t know if people overseas are familiar with these, but I would play Sorcerian, Hydlide, all these fantasy games from the classic PC era that I really enjoyed. I always wanted to make something around that theme. This is how I thought of a world revolving around a young man fighting together with a dragon. However, it was a big challenge for PlatinumGames. We were working in an environment we weren’t used to. We were developing on the Unreal engine, we also lacked the necessary know-how to build a game based on online features.

The hurdles we had to overcome were very big. We weren’t experienced enough and couldn’t get over that wall, leading to what happened in the end. ’m sorry to the players who looked forward to it, and moreover I’m sorry to Microsoft who had placed their trust in us as a business partner. I want to apologize both as a creator and as a member of PlatinumGames.”

Fair enough.

If the game wasn't up to standards and there was no way of fixing it, then I can understand why it was completely scrapped.

I'd like to seem them have another crack at it. I liked the premise of a guy and his dragon mixing it up against other fantasy creatures. The concept looked really fun.

Youre in luck because Bayonetta 3 is said to feature scrapped Scalebound mechanics!

how about not apologizing for the money you stole from MS and make the game still from all the money you took and release it on Xbox already ?
Xbox doens't want it anymore, they already burnt the money and the game is in a shitty state and lets be honest the only reason people give a shit a bout it was because its exclusive.

Its unfortunate it was cancelled, but this project was far too ambitious at the time for Platinum Games, Scalebound looked like an open world, 'western' action RPG, if it had been the type of action game Platinum was known for, there would be no problem, but the typical Platinum audience were confused, these games need massive amount of resources to be made, and also sell on their writting/story, Hideki Kamiya is a creative fellow but he is not a big name in game writting or fantasy world building. It was too big and it simply fell apart. It was like releasing a Monster Hunter World/Witcher made by a small/medium sized developer(who also takes on other projects) , one day Platinum will release their fantasy game but this one was too much for them(and honestly Microsoft should have known as well, and scaled down the project but keep the quality)

Yusuke Miyata, the lead designer of Scalebound( also helped design Wonderful 101 and Astral Chain) is now directing Bayonetta 3, wich is a game im more hyped for

Yeah, they stole a third parties money to use for another third parties game

Use your head you idiot
You are the only stupid person here. Scale bound and true fantasy live were not a third party games ( whatever that shit even means you are a fucking moron ) they were MS funded games exclusively for Xbox consoles . And those devs stole that funded money and not work on the game. Period . What a fucking moron man . You on the ignore list I can’t handle low IQ fucks

Take your tinfoil hat off. You might save whatever left over cells you still have in that hollow casing of yours

Shame, I would have been totally fine with a single player experience, but if they couldn't work well with the engine, I guess there wasn't much hope.

Good for them to come out and tell it like it is.

Important lesson for everyone that thinks that devs can do no wrong and it's always the publishers fault. Devs fuck up a lot, believe me.

Didnt MS ask for a multiplayer component and mister Kamiya said

Hideki Kamiya is known to be quite an outspoken character on social media, having been known to berate some fans of his on Twitter, attacking Sony in the past and even former colleague Keiji Inafune. Now it appears that he isn’t very happy with Microsoft, its marketing of Xbox One exclusive Scalebound and his designated role at Gamescom.

According to NeoGaf and our very own sources, Kamiya earlier tweeted the following;

MSのクソどもはよー…俺をナメてんのか… which, according to NeoGaf, roughly translates to:
“Those shits at MS… are they fucking with me…?”

Our Japanese correspondent Keita Iisaka confirms the above too (although we question his sanity let alone translation skills).

The tweet was then promptly deleted but not quick enough because, as you may very well know, it isn’t very hard to hide something on the internet once its posted. Furthermore, he also tweeted the following:

If I were to go to Gamescom, I want to go for users, not as a prop of Xbox Briefing.

Kamiya might be having issues with the way Microsoft are treating or presenting Scalebound at Gamescom. He certainly isn’t a fan of their marketing as can been by his response to a fan where he describes Microsoft’s attempts as ‘generic’ and ‘junk’. Ouch!

Kamiya is known for his outburts but Microsoft cannot afford to piss off a man like him who is releasing an exclusive for the Xbox One console which will be showcased next week in Germany, a territory where Microsoft has been completely dominated by arch rivals Sony and the PlayStation 4. Maybe Kamiya is simply in a shitty mood and he has said that he ‘might’ attend Gamescom depending on his emotional disposition at the time. As of now though, Microsoft need to tread carefully and whip out a giant leaf and the most succulent grapes one can find because Kamiya is not one to hold back!

Responding to a user on Twitter who asked “Wonder how this will affect Scalebound”, the ever delightful developer responded with the following:
Better than ur life. RT @Lollyzpopz Microsoft fucked up like always. Wonder how this will affect Scalebound. Game might be in serious troubl

It was sensible for Kamiya to admit the mistake, but questionable simply because it should have been talked about when Ms announced the game's cancellation in the face of widespread criticism, even after having invested a lot of money in development.

Looks like they took some of the grand scale fight elements and are incorporating those into Bayonetta 3 possibly based on the trailer earlier this year.

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
Will people finally stop blaming MS now?
Will people prefer to? People like GamingBritShow have built a career worshiping certain devs like Kamiya. Its more convenient for them to believe that "Microsoft interfered and destroyed their creative freedom".

It was everyone's GOTY after cancellation.

Here are some comments before they announced cancellation.
"xbonegros are so casual they need a help from dragon to beat the game "
"looks like a ps2 game "
"reason it's Xbone only.... It only works 720p. "
"It looks cheap and terrible and something from 15 years ago. "
"CINEMATIC 15 FRAMES PER SECOND "
"So someone gave Dante a hair cut and gave him a pet dragon........ok. "
""Play AS a Twitch Streamer" is this games logo... Soooooo immersion breaking!!!!!!!!!! Stupid headphones! "
"maybe only year exclusive lol " (replying to someone who said its xbox exclusive)
"maybe only year exclusive lol "
"Of course the headphones are coming in a deal that's why they gave them to the character. Microsoft said give us a item to sell "
"FPS be lower than my expectations for upcoming Bethesda titles"
"it looks super laggy, nothing else "
"Meanwhile Nier ran at 60 since the first trailer and actually has good animations and combos. I' m still exited simply because it's Kamiya, but it feels like Microsfot his holding him back and forcing graphics over actual depth and framerate "
"Looks fun, but WOOOOW is the main character's dialogue/attitude cringeworthy. >_<"
"You're welcome to migrate over to PS4 for greatness and RPGs. "
""pre-alpha gameplay" Lmao, nice marketing. "
"is it even 30 fps ?"
"Silky smooth 15 fps and 720p. nice. "
"Great I can be a douche with beat headphones listening to whinny rock music while the better character flies around in the background."
"Meanwhile Nier Automata plays great, with smooth framerate and good graphics, and most of all it plays like a Platinum game. This game doesn't even look like a platinum game, this game is a huge pile of mess. 😏 "
"that 2 fps tho "
"beautiful 20 frames per second. Amazing unsynchronized audi and movement. 10/10 GOTY "
"What is that? 8fps? "
"my eyes can't handle this fps "
"Of course he's wearing headphones. Jeez. "
"Is it 20 fps? "
"Xbox One does one thing.... it plays television really well... "
"wow this game 10 fps because very slow "
"It looks like it's playing at 15fps. Wtf..."
"I mean, if I had to choose between this or Horizon, I would get horizon ... "
"I don't want the "tude", the headphones and the "cool" music... NOT epic. Doesn't match. "
"Emo dante joins lost planet "
"Looks like a cheesy and overpowered (with pet dragon) version of Final Fantasy 15. "
"them framerate drops "
"The combos look so boring... Take some inspiration from DMC or GOW will you?"
"B. O. R. I. N. G "
"The concept of this game looks like it was written by a 10 year old. "
"what i dont get is if you have no interest in scalebound or xbox..why are you here watching the video and leaving a comment...are people really that insecure "
"i swear this comment section is cancer, are you all seriously arguing about which console has better games? grow up"
"You can tell the actor is a straight up white boy. "
"the main guy. It looks like he was made specifically for white males, age 10, who do nothing but drink Dew & much ritos all day, think staying up to 11pm on school nights is "wicked-sick," and are about to go through a rebelious stage. I hope we don't have to be this prick who litterally jumped right out of 2002. "
"I'm not going to lie this doesn't impress me at all. The Devil May Cry series has better gameplay then this. This looks like a game Nintendo would make. Definitely not worth buying an Xbox one for, they should put this on PC that way they can at least get this game to sell properly."
"This is terrible when compared to Horizon zero dawn.. LO "
"Yeah, should've bought a PS4...."
"The game is so choppy "
"This looks bad. :-( "
""go over there" 5 hours into this game I'll smash my tv I hate repetitive voice commands"
"dear god, that xbone signature 15 fps is giving me headache just from watching this "
"bad grafic style, lookliike action figure"
"looks like the whole game is on some slowmotion mode "
"The best part was when the main character stopped talking. "
"The world doesn't look impressive at all. It's like they put a lot of effort in the combat graphics and forgot about the environment "
"this game looks so... dull? uninspired? boring? "
"So can i have a manly sword instead of that toothpick? "
"cracka anime got it... pretty lame "
"30 fps lock and dropping heavily.. "
"the main character seems so douchey and grating. He's trying to be hip and witty and laid back, but it's just so forced and stale. Ugh, just kill me. "
"22 ~ 18 fps what the hell "
"Framerate bound "
"Here's a dragon to ride! Oh wait, you can only ride him in cut scenes or traveling to next level. LAME AF "
"Looks very slow. What are you doing Platinum..? A game for grandmas? Also, framerate better be 60 constant and not that horrible slideshow. "
"that frame rate "
"Compare this to Horizon Zero Dawn. Shocking. "
"How does platinum games make a game slower than devil may cry 1 "
"Uncharted I chose Youuuu! xD "
"Wow, Pokemon has taken a big step! "
"has a dragon but walks everywhere Genius "
"They should call this game 5fps bound lol! "
"the frame rate is too low "
"Rip Fps ^^ who agree "
"Uncharted 4 and Bloodborne. .. end of story... "
"Looks boring"
"What's with the horrible fps..? o_O "
"Glorious cinematic 15 FPS "
"Not for me, I'll pass on this one. "
"A headset while fighting? What is this BS? "
"5 ps per second "
"Horrendous frame rate and slow, simplistic combat aside, (I know it's only pre-alpha so these will naturally change after release) why are we seeing such an increase in generic, edgy, pseudo-hip protagonists these days..? Almost every word that came out of that character's mouth was painful and cringe worthy. And the dubstep battle music didn't help any. I blame Microsoft studios for this one. I can't imagine Platinum Games trying to appeal to such a demographic. I.E., The couple hundred 15 year olds that may arbitrarily decide to pick this game up one day. RIP. "
"Ugh, this turns me off in the worst way. It definitely feels like an XOne exclusive. "
"That "Music" is horrendous. "
After cancellation suddenly it was the best game to be ever made.

Suddenly after cancellation all these people came out to tell you that it was there most anticipated game.

So they wanted an Eastern developer of single player games make a Western multiplayer game? Yeaaaahh
I was looking forward to it, really. But now? Focus on Bayo 3, hope it will be good.

Expectations were too high, but it is never over. There is always a chance to move forward and do something new. Well, at least, that was before Tencent started buying PG. Now we don't really know what can happen.

Plantinum is a hit or miss studio. Seeing how bad their upcoming game Babylon Falls is and it was probably for the best they canceled it. They definitely need to start
gaining experience on how to navigate the current AAA landscape.
