PS5 as a 4K blu-ray player?

So, I've got my brother cleaning out his garage and he has a bunch of 4K Blu-ray movies he wants to give away. I initially told him I don't have a 4K Blu-ray player, so it'd be pointless for me, but then I realized the disc player I bought for my Pro (that I still have yet to receive) DOES read 4K UHD movies.

Browsing online tells me it's not as good as a standalone player, even a cheapass one, but I don't care all that much since I'm not a movie buff. As long as I got a nice 4K picture, I'm good to go. There's no Dolby Vision, but my S90D doesn't support it as far as I'm aware, so this isn't a big deal either. Is it any good as a Blu-ray player, or should I just go ahead and purchase a budget one because it doesn't do the job?

Thanks, bros.

It does the job just fine but doesn't have a lot of configuration options like a standalone player

If you're outputting to a modern 4K TV it's more than adequate, the TV does most of the work processing the image anyways

On an S90D you will still have HDR10 and despite the bleatings of DV worshipers you will find it very hard to see any difference in real world playback between HDR10 and DV

A PS5 doesn't properly switch out of ALL (Auto Low Latency) when it plays back video so you will need to manually disable Game Mode in the TV's settings to get the best picture quality for movie playback. Remember to use Filmmaker Mode on the TV and then look on the Internet for calibration settings if you want to adjust the picture further for movies. The RTings review of your TV is a good place to start for an easy pre-calibrated config for you to use

They're fine

As an addendum the PS5 disc drive is kinda noisy. Ymmv if that annoys you or not.

Huh, interesting. They're not even good CD players? Well, it seems the PS5 is good enough as a Blu-Ray player. Luckily, I didn't opt out for the Xbox which is worse in that aspect.

Hah, virgin.
I don't really buy disc's anymore.....it isn't 2001.

Sorry PhysicalGAF.

But I just remembered, I actually did use 1 disc. The Last Guardian unpatched to get the 60fps.

You sonofabitch! You opened that thread and then didn’t listen to we had to tell you. Tell me at least is a 77” model.
They’re already at Black Friday prices. Worst-case scenario, I got the holiday low price guarantee, so if it drops within 30 days, I can go back to the store and get refunded the price difference.

I really couldn’t wait. Have had my Pro since the 8th and it was sitting in a box for a few days. Afterwards, I hooked it up to my ultrawide monitor, but obviously, the Pro doesn’t support ultrawide.

I needed that TV asap.

Are you using some sound bar?

Nah, I was told they’re shit. I’m shopping for bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer. Nothing to fancy. Something in the $300-500 range. The sound from the TV is shite, so I’m using my headphones for now.

Yeah, and I have a girlfriend, but she lives in another town.

Soundbar + subwoofer + rear speakers isn't a bad setup in my experience.

If you don’t use the sound from the TV you can try to upgrade it to a S95C. First you have to check if your S90C has a second generation panel. If your model is 77” it HAS a second generation panel. Otherwise you’ll have to check the maintenance menu. I’d give you links but they are all in Spanish, so google that.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
PS5 is fine with UHD discs if all you want is payback, it lack Dolby Vision though.
But every problematic disc that has problems with different players all run perfectly on the PS5 ironically.

S95C is discontinued here. I initially looked for the S90C, but it wasn’t available either.

Also went for a 65" because I need space on my table and the 77" is too damn big. I did want it, but the measurements made no sense with my living room.

Oh. I thought it was a C. Probably the D has some exploit as well. I’ll look into it tomorrow.

No reason to get caught up in the FOMO, there will always be better panel tech coming out. Qdoled is better and brighter sure but the differences aren't that big in most content. As long as the price was right I don't think it's a big deal, you got an oled and that's the most important part.

Enjoy your inferior bitrate and missing fine details, streamer!
People don't understand how shit the quality of streaming is until you actually show them a 4K Blu-ray

And even then, most people will not care because the image quality of content is so shit these days anyways, your average shit tier Marvel film with cheap looking VFX won't really look any better on the 4K BD

I use to buy BR but I had hundreds of them and it just became an issue.

BR is definitely better.

I use mine all the time for blurays. Works without issue and never complained about picture quality.

Its decent, especially if youre buying uhd movies that support hdr

Crazy how it took the ps5 to finally add a 4k br player for ps when xbox got that down with the xbox one s

Yes, and now it's the best one, as the Series X's took a step back from both the One S and X drives. Bugs that never existed prior. PS5 has none of those problems and that's one if the reasons I kept it despite getting the Pro.

Completely Unreasonable
The disc drive on both my PS5 and Series X was far too loud when playing 4k discs to not ruin the experience. If you're watching on your own and have some nice headphones you could do that though.

I wasn’t aware of this. Is this common or did you just get a loud unit?

I think some people will be more or less sensitive to it, but given that both my consoles were practically identically noisy, I think it's likely that 4k discs need to spin very fast and that video game consoles aren't designed to do that quietly in the way that a dedicated player is designed to do.

Ymmv, of course, you might be less sensitive to it than me, or perhaps both my machines were peculiarly noisy, but I'd be surprised if quiet ones exist.

I mean…what reason is there to have a series x over a ps5?

Edit: kidding of course….mostly

I watched the 4K of 2001:ASO on it and my Sony ZD9 the other day and it was fucking glorious, the output is more than fine yes.

But as others have said the drive is noisy unfortunately, perhaps if you have it in an enclosed cabinet (with some ventilation ofc).

A dedicated player is going to be more clear, but the PS5 will be fine. If you really like your 4K Blu-ray movies and you want the best possible quality. You can buy a dedicated player later.

It'll be fine. I actually like the trayless part of it. The only reason I dont use mine for it, is I have 3 x dedicated players. Visually and audio wise for a non DV TV, it should be very close to my £1000 Panny player to be honest. You just dont get the options of fine tuning the picture and changing the tone mapping. And it will definitely be louder from a drive mechanism perspective.

I'm signed up to Disney+ at the moment and whilst the 4k HDR stream is fine. Its a very noticeable step down from my 4k discs. If you want the best fidelity, 4k physical is the way.

Prefer streaming but believe me even the ps3 is a capable blu ray player unless you’re desperate for the best picture possible.

I use mine for blurays and its perfectly fine. I even bought the remote thingie to not use the controller, hardly worth it, but whatever.

Some disks are making quite a bit of noise during playback, usually the most packed 4k ones. Also had troubles playing the Aliens collection, some disks are not going past the menu, no idea if it is a disk problem or playstation's.

I have upgraded to Pro and I am now trying to justify to myself selling it to get a standalone player. Panasonic UB820 costs the same 500EUR and will only enable DV, not sure if it is worth it. And I wont get the 500 eur back if I try to sell my og ps5, so idk.

Wait you got S90D?! Congrats man and a smart choice as far a PS5 as a 4k player I think it's great but I've owned a Panasonic and it's definitely slightly better I was shocked how close the PS5 was to it though.

It does the job, but it's far from the best 4K blu-ray player and Sony doesn't really care the way they did on PS3 (the PS3 was a legit great BR player for most if not all of its run, and they added features over time).

I don't remember the last Bluray we bought. I think they were Christmas Gifts. I'd be happy to sell the ones we got left and use the shelf space for 3d printed hand painted gaming figures.
More fun than storing media.
