Funny that Ybarra specifically said the SSDs was something Xbox gave out to people for positive feedback

People should really stop quoting him as he is nothing more than an extension of Xbox PR

That was the nickname given to the Asian Giant Hornets that briefly infested certain areas of the United States in 2021. They got the name because videos showed them viciously murdering honeybees. But like every other media sensation in the post-pandemic world, they turned out to be a whole lot of nothing. They were limited mostly to Washington State and eradicated by the end of the year, not to be seen since.

As for the rest of your question, you probably already know the answer: It has nothing to do with it at all. It's all just excuses. If I were working on a networking project and did a half assed job and tried using the same excuses, my bosses would laugh as security escorted me out of the building. Yet, for some reason (and particularly in game dev), these kind of excuses aren't just tolerated, they actively let people fail upward into positions they should never hold.

At my company, the issues are different than those and anything US based like politics or fucking hornets. Any company that has to do with traditional crap you buy at the store got hammered with numerous issues when covid hit. And we came out of it fine. It was hectic and weird, but it worked out. Even though office staff worked from home for 2 full years, it can still work out. You just need focus and people knowing what to do even though they are sitting at home. And management to get people in line. Everyone hates meetings, but when everyone is alone working in their living room, you got to have some new cadence how to do things and a staff who are willing to listen and get the job done even though everyone knew they wouldnt be seeing anyone face to face for an unknown amount of time (which for us was 2 years).

For the first year of covid, our CEO did monthly town hall meetings to go over stuff (business performance, covid, health &safety etc...) Normally it's once every 6 months. But VPs and CEO did that to set the tone to keep going best you can. And ya, if you got issues of course the company will help you out. Hell, every person got the green light to buy whatever office gear and printer you needed it. Health & safety first, but there's still a job to be done. Just because youre at home doesn't mean you can just coast hoping nobody notices.

It's a weird covid situation where things got wacky. The last thing on my management's mind would be "hey gang, everyone gets Fridays off!" What a weird way to overcome covid. It goes to show how serious they were finishing the game best they can years ago when every company had shit hit the fan during the pandemic.

So if anyone from Arkane is reading GAF, let's not pretend your company is the only one affected in life the past bunch of years.

- Lots of people turnover. Hardly anyone fired, but somehow during covid you still got people changing jobs when you'd think office staff would hunker down and WFH not trying to rock the boat. So when people leave during covid time it's harder to train newbies and get them to know people. Even right now were back to office the past year but it's limited hybrid. You go to the office and there's people you have no idea who they are since you've never seen them on conference calls. You speak to them and they say they've been working here for 8 months. Then you think to yourself "Oh shit, I'm an idiot for not knowing who you are"

- People overbuying certain products killing supply

- Inventory shortages that lasted 2 years

- People not buying certain products because everyone is at home (anything related to travel or personal care dropped like a rock)

- I'm not in logistics, but it seemed anything to do with trucking and/or warehousing got affected too where suddenly transport trucks got hard to find so shipping to stores became
tough and scheduling was a mess. You had lines of trucks outside our warehouse waiting for pick up and drop off, and so were retailer distribution centres. It'd get so bad some places would just leave 18 wheeler containers sitting in shipping bay parking lots for weeks before they could get around to unloading it

- Sales and inventory were so wacky during 2020 and 2021 at manufacturers and retailers neither side could make good estimates. More problematic for any side who relied on automated forecast systems than human brains because if you go on machine analysis they go by what happened. But since things got back to normal in 2022, that transition time needed human brains manually overriding orders as sales trends got back to normal. Not an easy task especially if the company isn't fully staffed

Played on Series X.

I only played it for around an hour, so I get it that I just messed with a tutorial level and accessing the main fire station hub. But in that short time I think the only things that were good were:

- Audio. Creepy sounds and voice actin seemed good
- Even though the game only runs at 30 fps, the gunplay felt fine. To me, the game has a very Fallout 4 30 fps feel to it, but the gunplay in Redfall felt a bit better

The game would get a big boost if all the visuals were improved a lot (textures), character models and dead bodies got improved, the game gets boosted to 60 fps, and all the graphical glitches are fixed.

I didn't experience any in my short playtime, but the game seems to have a lot AI issues with monsters too.

Right off the bat, the game feels off. The FOV is bad (adjustable in options), and picking up items is bad as there's issues with item detection unless you stand above the item in the perfect spot.

It feels like it’s only Xbox that still uses the pandemic as an excuse for lack of quality games.
I'm going to take a wild swing and guess here, but I get this weird feeling software studios at MS seem to take a real lax work ethic there. Like they realize they work at giant trillion dollar corporation and coast till retirement, where missing deadlines, going over budget, and hit and miss quality arent a big deal as the company oozes money. So it doesn't really matter.

I played for about 5 hours before I just got bored and too frustrated to continue, so I don't know if that's enough time for you to consider my thoughts valid or not. Alas, here they are:

There are some positives. I don't completely share StreetsofBeige StreetsofBeige 's thoughts on shooting -- I found it to be floaty and lacking in "punch", but it's serviceable and could easily be patched up into something much better. Strange object sizes/perspectives aside (like the hands and furniture), I think the art design is very good but is brought down by poor decisions with regard to visual effects. The art does capture a haunted New England aesthetic decently enough but it could have been so much better had they added things like dynamic fog to enhance the experience.

But everything else is just so broken. Uninspired mission design, which can never really be patched into anything better. The enemy AI and enemy density might be fixed in a patch but the world layout will always hold them back no matter what they do. Weapon balance needs help -- once you get a decent assault rifle and shotgun, you'll lean on those the most. Everything else I tried was excessively weak by comparison.

At its core the game feels fundamentally broken and I'm not sure it's fixable without completely tearing it down and rebuilding it from the ground up.

I'm just not sure Arkane (or Bethesda, or Microsoft) will be willing to spend that kind of time and money on it. Redemption stories like No Man's Sky are outliers, not the norm. I think it's more likely the game goes the way of Anthem or The Avengers -- limited support for a while and then dropped so the studio can move on to other projects.

Okay so I'm like 5 hours in, solo only so far, and I'm pretty sure I shouldn't be enjoying myself this much? Like yeah it's a bit janky and could of definitely used more time in the kitchen but it feels like a solid 7/10 for me, which is a good score, I don't know maybe it's because I have loved pretty much everything Arkane has released so far.

About a year ago or so I remember seeing a whole lot of posts on Twitter all copy/pasting the exact same thing, all from "Xbox Ambassadors". It read something like this or a variant thereof: "Xbox is a place for inclusive, safe, accessible gaming where we welcome and celebrate the achievements of all gamers." That is taken straight from the "Xbox Ambassador's Handbook" on their site. Truncated to fit in Twitter format.

Then there's their Discord and Ambassador only forums, where the mods frequently post talking points about new release games, Game Pass, or other Xbox-related material -- then encourage users to go out to other social media sites to spread the word. This month, for example, there's a focus on telling the world about Xbox's commitment to the Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander community.

It's a genuinely smart marketing campaign on the part of Microsoft. Why pay a bunch of marketing firms to do the job their fans are willing to do for free, and all they have to give them is a web-based "mission" system where they can "earn" level badges for their Xbox profile?

If you like/enjoy the game, then like/enjoy the game. I have loved games that most people hated, and I have hated games most people loved. Its all down to personal taste.

It's smart but at the end of the day, no matter the shills and all those marketing, you still have to deliver quality content which MS has failed miserably yet again. I remember all the shills saying that MS has the best services, the best OS, Xbox Live, the best-looking console, and Gamepass aka the "best value in gaming" etc. but where are the games? Like the single most important thing for a gaming console. People don't buy consoles for services, they buy them for games.

That's why they are dead last yet again and are tracking behind the Xbox One in sales. Other companies such as Nintendo and Sony are focusing their priority on delivering quality games, while MS focuses on everything but producing quality games. It's like they are trying to over compensate for the lack of quality exclusive content.

This was Arkanes first attempt to get out of their limited audience pitfall and reach further out into the mainstream. If Microsoft doesn't prevent them, they now have a foundation to work with for their next project. There's always a silver lining somewhere.

They just need to come up with a game that has the quality of Dishonored, or Arx Fatalis that appeals to the mainstream somehow.

In absolute terms, yes. But from a PR point they have lost a lot. Rebuilding trust will be hard, and need a lot of work on Redfall first, and this eventual game next. Going mainstream is not really needed. Just making a good game with all the added benefits we are accoustumed to. Good UI, good engine, no bug, all the options that people want, good marketing that does not lie like they did with Redfall...
The bigger the game, the harder this will be. As I saw this, they should concentrate on Redfall for the rest of this gen, and prepare the tech/studio to work on a game that will be on Xbox end of generation if possible, or even cross gen with whatever is next on Xbox.

A live service is not easy to do. All games are not easy to do. And this experiene will help them in the future. But they need to fix what they have now first. And that will take years. If they do not do that, they will just either accept the PR hit and show something in the next 2 years and have the Redfall ghost on them until release, or loose the opportunity to have a new game for the remainder of the Xbox Series S/X generation. Hard choice no matter what.

It does not make you less right. Failure is often when we learn the most. But the cost of failure is high too. As long as they are still helped by Xbox, there is a chance. But I feel that Bethesda will not care about them that much now that Xbox is in charge. And Xbox seems to be understaffed for managing that much studios and between Gamepass deals, the Activision merger drama and their current woes... I can see them be left to their own devices a few years, or be reduced to somethin lesser like 343i was.

If you enjoy it, you enjoy it. I don’t care for it personally but don’t let anyone take that away from you. Fanboys will try their hardest though.

I think you are giving this game more weight against Arkane than it actually has.

And I think you are trying to dismiss the enormity of this failure and how it will effect Arkane. This isn't the first mediocre/bad game they have produced. This is the second, in a row. There has be a clear and steady decline in quality of their titles and fans are pissed.

Try to put From software or Housemarque in Arkane position. And instead of getting Demon's souls or Returnal we got something like Redfall. Would those studio get better from it, or have to fight for survival?
I am exagerating a little, of course. But I do believe that Redfall will give them problems for a few years. Will their director stay or leave? Will they work hard to fix a game that have been abandonned by most of the people that tried it? Will they abandon it themselves and rush into another game? Do they have a plan for that in place? Will recrut people to work on Redfall be easy, or will talented people prefer to work elsewere?

Just a few questions about what their future will be. Because Arkane Austin is only a part of Arkane, who is under Bethesda, who is under Xbox, who is under Microsoft, a lot of people will have to be consulted about this too. We are close to the half way point of this gen. Unless Arkane Austin can work like Insomniac and make a game in 2 years, they have made their game of this generation. From this, how can they evolve, get the funding to stay on top of all the requirements of a AAA game? Xbox will probably fund it. But I can't see them doing what Sony did to Santa Monica when they had a bad moment with Ascension and their cancelled project, but getting a new building and a lot of money to make GOW 2018. Platinum games was at risk of bakruptcy when Scalebound was cancelled. Do you consider Redfall less of a hard blow for Arkane Austin ? I do not say that they are doomed. Just that they lost a lot. And I do not trust Xbox to give them the leading vision they need in a moment like this.

I get that the game has a bad reputation. But this is Arkane who has had trouble branching out for a long time now and I doubt that many of their fans are going to put that much heat on them. It's more likely Arkane fans will expect the next game to me more focused so this same situation doesn't happen again given how different Redfall is from the rest of their dev history good or bad. Half the complaints I'm seeing are blaming Microsoft instead of Arkane.

I agree. Their fans will want for a more focused game. Most of them will probably forget about Redfall by then, or at least I hope so. I do remember old From software. And loved their games. Even tried a few of their ps1 games. Dont see the point of that question, sorry.

Yes, I've put in maybe a little less time, and I agree with you. The premise is fine, the setting is interesting, and that's about it. The rest is either uninspired or broken, and it would take so much to fix it would be essentially a new game. But perhaps some of the people that made it all the way through will step in. There may be good things further in that you and I would obviously have missed.

I enjoy it more than Back 4 Blood but less than Rainbow 6 Extraction.
The missions are quite short and really just involve fast travelling across the map.
There is some really cool looking visual scenes like the water frozen but flowing, pharmacy and psychic doors, vampire nests and various other 'arenas'. However it is immediately contrasted by the bland streets, open fields and simplistic urban areas.
The gunplay is solid enough if you're not expecting anything great. Headshots are satisfying, the UV light feels 'right', pistol feels a little lightweight and shotgun lacks stopping power.
In general there must be about 6 different guns and you're just picking up higher level versions of them. So it's a named weapon (like 3 different assault rifles, 3 diff shotguns).
The town itself is empty. You can run most of it and maybe see 3 vampires hanging out, or 4 cultists between locales. It's not even as dynamic as the Far Cry 6 co op missions.
You can have fun in co-op. I doubt I'm going to keep it installed beyond the two runs though. It's like 80gb.
I don't think there's anything that can be done to fundamentally change the game from what it is. And I think it would be wasted time. The time for a first rework patch will probably have seen everyone move on. I can't think of any DLC or expansion options that would make me keep it installed/return.
The 'powers' each character has are pretty underwhelming. Probably Devinder is the only useful one, followed by Remi robot distract. We don't really use any of them.
The skill tree is superfluous except for carry more ammo and gain more health.
No matchmaking is a massive mistake, said it with godfall and will say it again. If you're creating a Co-op game it absolutely needs matchmaking.
Some of the effects are good like the vampire stake and rook spawn.
None of the upgrades really feel significant like the god remnants, blood vials or grave lock components.
Level scaling is really weird on coop. It can be really easy one second then someone will level and the enemies will suddenly jump.
AI is poor in general, but there are times when attacking as a single player it comes together. They don't seem to know how to handle multiple players and often won't engage passive players even if they are in eyeline.

Bottom line is of you haven't exhausted all the other PvE coop shooters, this isn't in the top bracket. If you have, its come at the right time to spend a couple weeks with before the big games start dropping.

I've still got mine installed. Just waiting on some more updates. I don't feel I gave it enough of a chance with just 6 hours. But now I've moved on to some other games so may be a while before I fire it up again.

If properly budgeted, limited audience games can be very profitable per dollar. Forcing an immersive sim studio to make looter shooter drivel will never been a good use of resources.
 
@ cormack12 cormack12 I'm still enjoying my time with it as well. It's actually a fun game if you just enjoy it for what it is. I doubt it will make the "my favorite games of all time list" of many players, but not many games do.

Arkane was running into the same problem late Looking Glass was. You're right it can be profitable per dollar but it depends on the sales and the costs of development for what game you're making. If you keep falling below what you need too put the studio in jeopardy.

If Arkane was independent they probably would have closed down back in 2018. So the question is, how much does Microsoft want to spend on Arkane projects that are only managing to fight breaking even?

While I do agree that Redfall was too soon without testing the waters first, it doesn't seem like anyone forced them to do it. Looks like Arkane wanted to go in that direction themselves since they were working on the game before Microsoft acquired the studio and I don't see any evidence Bethesda forced them to make it.

My final review since I just completed the game (no spoilers)
Pros:
-Gameplay loop of shooting vampires and staking them is kind of cool
-Sometimes the aesthetic of the game is intriguing and fits the theme they were going for
-Game is simple and straight forward with fast travel points and defined quest locations
-Rook storms coming down after you complete a certain amount of objectives and pitting you against a "strong" enemy is kind of cool.

Cons:
-Performance, kept crashing on Series X mostly starting in the second area. Crashed more and more as I got closer to the end of the game. Framerate tanked into what seemed like single digits in some fights.
-Characters are boring, the abilities feel weak to me. My character I chose was Layla because I thought the vampire boyfriend would be like an AI companion, however its just a glorified ability that stunlocks you when you cast does some damage and disappears.
-Deadzone on the controller you can't change should be a crime. Makes shooting feel clunky. Have to have analog stick all the way to one side just to make camera move at all.
-Missions are repetitive and uninspiring. The safehouse and most side missions are just you going to a random house and killing a named boss vampire that has no unique traits at all except more health than other ones.
-Ai is the worst ive ever seen in my entire life. sometimes ai just walks right past you. they get stuck. its worse than you could imagine.
-Damage seems out of wack. sometimes you get shot for like 30% of your hp from a random cultist, but a vampire can hit you for 15%. Whats up with that?
-Map is a copy pasted mess. It seems like they made a small amount of assets and were like okay how do we make a game out of one zone? each zone follows the exact same formula.
-story is told through slide shows or sticky notes/notes you find on the ground for the most part. no cutscenes. nothing to compell your average player to sit there and listen and be immersed in the story.
-The whole "med kit, lockpick, rewire kit, ammo" thing is annoying. you find a door? need a lockpick. rewire kit? need that. you just go buy it from a vendor. can only hold 3 at a time. feels like some kind of arcade minigame rather than one trying to tell you a story. ammo is scarce so you're constantly fast traveling, buying ammo, going back out. it's just annoying.
-no matchmaking built in. game could have benefited from drop in drop out matchmaking.
-loot is repetitive and boring. you see the same like 3 legendary items all game. stats are pretty irrelevant. why even bother having different item raritys?

I could go on and on with the cons but I'll leave it at there.
My final review is
If I look at this game as a $70 +tax day one purchase, I give it a 3/10
If I look at this game as game pass fodder (just something to do cause bored and you are already subscribed), I give it a 6/10

I hate to call a game, game pass fodder, but it is what it is.

Yes, there was a patch shortly after launch. It was mainly a server side patch that helped in co-op, fast travel glitches and the game seizing up and crashing.

Cons:

There is a perk in the skill tree called Deeper Pockets that let's you carry 8 lockpicks and 8 rewire kits. The perk is available as soon as you hit your first level and earn your first skill point. Lockpicks and rewire kits can be found all throughout the world, not just safe house vendors. There are skill tree perks that let you carry more ammo as well and every single human that you kill that has a weapon drops ammo. Ammo can also be found all throughout the world, such as shelves, tables, backpacks, bags, ammo lockers, car trunks, etc. The only ammo that is just slightly more hard to find is the power weapon ammo, as it should be. Shotgun, pistol and rifle ammo is everywhere.

Not sure with your complaint about the gold/Unrivaled items as well. There are more than just three and there are differences in perks and as you advance levels, the weapons scale up as well. Some of the gold weapons are unique and can only be found in specific locations. The gold/Unrivaled weapons are also the only weapons that have three perks. There is also a gold/Unrivaled blood perk as well, that can only be found by completing a mystery/puzzle side quest in the game.

Either I'm blind or Layla doesn't have an option for more lockpicks/rewire kits. I'm always running out of ammo for my best weapon. I've found the variety in weapons lacking. Despite being "legendary" they all do about the same thing. Nothing special.

Goolging it, Deeper Pockets is a Jacob character perk.
