One of the dumbest articles and headlines I've ever seen, basically akin to "$300,000 Ferrari expected to create surge in industry demand as it and "others" launch new products later this year" (with the throw away unnamed other being a $25K all electric Camry with 400 mile range). Quest 2 has moved near 30 million units, Apple's $3000 nonsense won't even be a blip in the radar against Quest 3 which is likely to be a Wii style sales phenomenon if they actually have exclusive games lined up for launch. Apple's price is so divorced from reality the only demand they'll drive is Quest 3 even higher into the stratosphere. What a dumb fuck author.

Feels like controlled leaks at this point, like they’re trying to get consumers to get used to hearing about a fake $3,000 price so a real $1,500 price seems like a positive surprise.

Either way, it’ll bomb.
And the Samsung headset too.
And Quest 3.
PSVR2? Very likely.

The VR market don’t actually need more or better or more unique hardware, what’s needed is proper AAA developer investments. For years now AAA devs has been sitting on the fence waiting for more consumers to jump in and consumers has been sitting on the fence waiting for more AAA devs to jump in. At some point people will just give up and jump off the fence and walk away.

Apple knows better than anyone that VR right now is an insular, isolated experience. In order to make it mainstream they know it as to become a social experience. Even something as simple as having a screen that shows your expressions is a brilliant idea and a step forward.

I like that Apple is aiming for such a high price range. It means that they are going all in and trying to do something powerful and exciting(hopefully). If they then become successful and create something revolutionary, it'll trickle down to other cheaper alternatives in time.

Agree. They can’t just make a headset with the App Store shovelwear. They’ve been trying to invest into showing more live sports

I mean, they COULD if they add motion controls to that shovelware. Many people like the appstore games and apple arcade, so having VR in 4K with waggle may be the mainstream novelty needed. Who knows.

Best selling VR game on the best selling VR headset is a A near small studio game called Beat Saber, and all higher tier games so far haven't sold or moved any headsets yet in large number despite the glowing reviews.

The Morning Consult thread showed data that 54% of people who are interested in VR don't want controllers.

I think the mainstream wants something different than what gamers on forums such as yourself want. They want waggle with a wireless high-quality premium headset with cool things like rings put on your finger to help with precision like out of a sci-fi movie. They want the cool unique experiences over games. Unless the game itself aids in being an experience.

The week the switch was revealed was the hugest neurotic meltdown I've ever seen in here.

There was so much distain for the Wii U that people forgot Nintendo was consolidating their resources to one handhelds, had the handheld market to themselves, and was strong enough to get recognizable low-grade but still recognizable ports of home console games, while having detachable controllers you could customize, while still having the ability to plug to a TV and can do the casual waggle stick.

It was obvious Switch was going to succeed, the only arguments that made sense were how MUCH it would work, it did much better than expected, but the people thinking it would be 3DS2.0, or that it would flop because it shared partial identity with the Wii U's game tablet plan, among other things, they were not really looking at the big picture.

Professionals of what?
What job requires wearing an expensive VR headset?

Military.

But Apple is aiming this toward consumers, probably professionals as well but they are after consumers mainly as said in the other thread.
 
Pretty excited for this, VR space may finally get legitimized with Apple entering. I’m always into new tech when it comes out, $3k won’t be bad if it’s quality

The only urge I have is to laugh at Apple thinking I'm paying $3,000 for a VR headset. I don't even want to spend the cheapest price for the Meta Quest 2.

All we’ve got is VR modes for previously released games with little to no real hype.

I guess Half Life Alyx is closest to AAA we’ve seen.
Now, try to imagine if it was Half Life 3.

Or imagine if PSVR2 launched with GT8 or GT Sport 2. Actual new games, exclusive to VR.
Or imagine if Quest 3 would’ve launched with exclusive Hogwarts Legacy or if Starfield was out on Steam VR day 1 with a VR mode in Skyrim VR quality.

It’s always older AAA games with new VR modes or B teams doing some special titles.

Not anymore. Those who are excited to play a new GT and RE has already played these games at this point, from here on it’s about playing a VR mode.

New big budget AAA games day 1, preferably in well-established IPs the market know and are excited for, is what will sell new hardware to new groups of people.
That’s a system seller and that’s what VR has been needing since the start.

Tbh it’s no different to what is needed to sell other platforms.
I mean was Deathloop a system seller on Xbox a year later? What about new unique AA games High on Life and Hi-Fi Rush? Maybe Pentiment? Scorn?
I’m gonna say no to everything.

Quest 2 nearly popped the niche bubble, it was cheap and didn’t need anything else, but devs failed to keep the platform exciting and now the mainstream and casual are back to ”been there, done that, meh”. Everyone doing VR headsets now has to convince these people that it’s worth it to jump in again. It’ll be difficult.

And who exactly is supposed to see those expressions? the fam? friends? I don't know why anyone should care and how is that a selling point. The people around you see your expression while you actually experience the game?

I think as Sony is about to find out with the psvr2 without the software to back it and real innovation the market is not going to grow. Apple have never been good at producing games themselves and their Apple Arcade deals with publishers is half hearted, they would need something beyond a "metaverse" to create the hook for people to jump on board, perhaps they will have something, but it could be argued that they haven't really delivered on innovation since the passing of Steve jobs..

Not necessarily a selling point in and of itself, rather another bullet point on a long list of features the device is sure to have. The goal for Apple is to stand out from other headsets in the space and to make it easier for customers to imagine using VR/mixed reality in their daily life.

Yeah sorry to say it but that’s a dumb idea, they’re just throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks. Just look at the mouth if you like to look at someone smiling while they play a game, it’s not like we’re wearing fully enclosed helmets, yet.

Sony’s second screen at least tried to solve a problem that exist. Family and friends also sitting in the living room might want to be included in a living room gaming session. Don’t know how popular that was though.

It seems ridiculous at face value, but this is Apple we are talking about. It could be gen 1 is for pros only, and gen 2 costs half as much, they make everyone feel like they need it worse than Mario Kart, and make it easy to buy with a financing deal like an iPhone. Anything can happen we've seen it before.

I say this as someone who hates Apple and don't have a single mac device in my house.
 
I’ll never dismiss Apple’s ability to shake things up and make hot products. I own the whole Apple ecosystem of MacBook, iPad, iPhone, watch, etc. But they have flops if they chose to make a $3000 VR headset, it’d sound like one of them.

Though the price is ridiculous, I believe this headset will actually be best in class and have cutting-edge tech when it releases, not to mention will legitimize and expand the market. This won’t be just a $1K bookstand or whatever else they peddle

Eh, the kinda people who buy overpriced Apple hardware are dumb enough to buy this thing probably. I don't think that means it'll be a success, but Christ Apple fans don't have a goddamn clue what to do with their money, so I could see why Apple would think it could be a success.
