Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Probably the last repros I will get. Tired of dealing with sketchy sellers and the prices are getting too high, plus having an Everdrive now renders these things kinda obsolete.

I was always under the impression the prices had been coming farther and farther down on repros lately, due to AliExpress

Yeah you can get them cheap on Aliexpress but they're pretty bad quality. It also takes a long time for them to arrive from China. A lot of US sellers are jacking up their prices to $30-40 with a box for more popular titles. I'm assuming they're doing good business by having people resell them on Amazon or Ebay.

wow, is there a market for repro? i never understood the purpose behind them...

i bought a few years ago to have english translations of certain games, or unreleased US stuff (Alien Soldier, other sega channel games). the guy selling them had like a B2G1 so i ended up grabbing MUSHA, Punisher & Centy since i didn't see having the $ to buy legit copies, even at prices back then.

having long since invested in a mega everdrive, they feel a little silly...but there's clearly a market.

I'm only just realizing these are US game repros. That's usually my personal line, though i respect if you like having them on the shelf when it comes to stuff like Splatterhouse 3 or MUSHA or Centy and stuff.

I only tend to do translation and unreleased repros. Romhacks (about 95% anyways) just don't have enough staying power for me.

When the price for the original is getting too high but you still want to put a cartridge into your console to play that game.

Like buying the pocket edition of a book you want to read instead of trying to find the original edition in a thrift store or in an auction house for too much money. You could get the pdf online and put it on your ereader but you know, people like physical objects.

How so? Sub Terrania is still pretty good/cheap, but its just that Jake's on vacation or something so hes probably not here to make a post. We can definitely roll with it in his absence though.

Also yeah, when it comes to repros, stuff that didnt hit in your region or were never translated in your language is the usual goal. Those two posted are...kinda on the line of those Russian Federation Ebay auctions. Way off what you'd expect ( Pulseman, Alien Soldier, Monster World IV, Romhacks, Unreleased games, etc).

yeah sub terrania is good! i guess maybe there was no talk about game of month much so i thought it was dead... i'm rolling with it =)

for repros, a local retro store starting carrying them a few weeks ago and i got confused why they were. (these were of games that were already translated) and a few hard to find and a few normal price games. they guy was selling them pretty high. but good to know it was mainly about translations etc.

Me too. Its like yeah, new genny game, but it just kinda looks like a worse ikari warriors or something. Trailer didnt do a lot for me.

I ended up biting. I figure it'll look good next to Sacred Lines and Pier Solar on my shelf, even if it isn't that good, lol.

Yeah, I haven't tried any of their games. Somewhat interested in Pier Solar but the reception seems a bit lukewarm. Pier Solar is up for sale again via Genesis and Dreamcast on their site if anyone's interested FYI.

Anyone else gonna buy Papi Commando? I'm kinda on the fence...

i'm looking to pull the trigger - watermelon stays fucking up Project Y (hoping for news today!) but i like supporting indie devs on my system of choice, and it's a bad price by me for a cart + manual. i mean, it looks like some low-rent SMS rambo first blood part 2/MERCS shit but i do tend to dig that kinda game, and hell, i preordered a copy of fucking Beggar Prince this year, so clearly my judgment is long since gone haha

ehhh the more YT vids i look at on Papi Commando, the less i wanna jump on it, kinda feels like a webgame approach to Mercs or something...maybe another time

Played a ton of SOR3 last evening. Just me or does the game kind of stale a little after rescuing the general. It's like the main events of killing the MR X robot and then the new style of gameplay with the lift and bomb countdown are the highlight, then it just feels grindy after that. Throwing tons of enemies at you just for the sake of it. Especially the robot factory feels like a drag.

Plus that music man, I just can't get into it.

The gameplay though is amazing. I was playing it with a six button controller, and having some of the moves mapped on a button felt really great.

I'm totally biased towards Bare Knuckle III, it's easily my all-time favourite beat'em up on consoles, so it's really hard to me to even think something negative about it. :D
I still find the post-rescuing-the-general part fun enough, as I pick a different route each time I play through the game, in order to watch a different ending (it's not like the game offers tons of them, but it lets you decide, at least). Plus, I'm not sure the elevator stage in BKII/SoR2 - boss-recycling included - was all that different, tbh. Or the final stretch in Final Fight... I'm not saying it couldn't have been done better, only that I got used to that kind of 'ideas', back then.

Feel like my power switch on my Model 1 Genesis is less "clicky" now. On my other Genesis turning the switch on and off produces a satisfactory click. On this one however, the switch seems to slide softly into On, while turning it off does produce a click. Haven't had any issues related to video/audio so far. Do I have anything to worry about?

Yay my everdrive MD has shipped! Got a folder full of sonic 1-3 hacks I can't wait to play through

Just gotta decide which cart shell to use for it....jp or western. Hm

Well part of the club now!

So I guess a combo of this, Sub Terrania, Thunder Force 2, and McDonalds today.

I know its not a boot just by looking at it, as its got general wear from use, legit cart back and label...but kinda still want to open it.

It's almost certainly legit, but you might as well. Easy to open US games without dealing with labels getting damaged in the process.

Can never be too safe imo

True.

Gameplay wise,it starts off abit too easy, and its got Compile's traditional "the stage isnt over yet" length, but stage 3 kicks you in the teeth lol. I really like how every compile shooter has so many different attack configs for a single ship. Option directions, speed changes, etc.

Should be fine, it's a fairly solid slider button on the motherboard. Probably just wear and tear.making it not click. My PAL Mega Drive doesn't click, but my Genesis does. Both work fine.

Congrats! Got mine this summer! Be sure to check out the Master System library too!

I never liked how JP carts were assembled. I prefer the gamebit assembly of the western ones. Easier to open and smaller risk of damaging the label.

Great, thanks for the help! Back to my Snatcher playthrough :)

Got a repro cart of Alien Soldier, but it literally won't fit in my non-tmss model one.

Guy who sold it to me said it worked on his american model 2. Are the cartridge slots in model 2's actually larger or something? Cause this thing simply won't go in

Sounds like he used a Mega Drive shell, or I have a couple of repros that are shaped like Genesis carts but are slightly bigger.

So not only do retro video games get cannibalized for Repros, but now they also get cannibalized to be turned into hipster USB drives?

Remind me to go hug my old games when I get home from work today, they don't deserve this.

you only need a mold and a cast-off for the latter (and in some cases the former as well)

Yeah, but directly from the link regarding this release... Even if you're just taking sports games, it feels wrong to me.

Also, the carts were all created from repurposed Genesis boxes and carts, so they are of varying quality. Super authentic!

Yeah, it's the whole hollow hipster aesthetic of adopting things for their style and a wisp of nostalgia, and not any genuine love. Pretty lame.

It's... a... great... day... for... some... football. Joe Montana II was the king of football games for me back in the day. The play by play was mind blowing, even if it was often (hilariously) wrong, and the game was simple and fun to play. Never was able to get into Madden, then or now. The other games were thrown in by the store for a buck. Guess they took me for a sucker who'll buy anything. Those terrible 70s style uniforms in the Double Dribble wannabe closeups in Pat Riley basketball are hilarious! Arnold Palmer Gold isn't bad besides the music and you have to guess on the distance the clubs will go. Haven't played World Series 96 yet, but I recall it being pretty decent.

Always interesting revisiting old Sports games: I have a buddy at work who every time I mention my retro game hobby, he swears up and down than Ken Griffy Jr. Baseballnis the best game ever made.

Also, some of those forgotten Sports games have some real awesome music gems. Take, for example, the menu theme from Coach K Basketball

I would actually say Coach K is my favorite basketball game ever. RBI Baseball is the best baseball game ever. Followed closely by Sammy Sosa High Heat Baseball 2001 for PC.
