Team Asobi Says Astro Bot Pushed PS5 Processing Power "To Its Limits"

Monster Hunter Wilds is pushing PC to its limits right now.
In all of the wrong ways, that is.

OT: This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has an idea about hardware. Astrobot is heavily physics and simulation-based, which puts a massive strain on the CPU. Top that with a resolution that hovers between 1440p and 4K, lock it to 60 fps, and yeah… It’s going to be a demanding game lol.

Let’s all not forget that consoles use APUs, folks, and are working off of specific power/wattage profiles. Pushing hardware to its limit does not directly correlate to the amount of pixels onscreen, the level of density, how realistic the graphics are, nor how big the world is. I’ve never played Astrobot, and likely never will unless it one day comes to PC, but I could always tell that it was doing things that would make the PS5, a $500 console, sweat.

zen 2 is practically jaguar tier performance nowadays
so it's probably true
Respectfully, this is so disingenuous, that I’d be surprised if you weren’t kidding. Jaguar CPUs can’t render and support lumen, nanite, hardware ray tracing, nor higher frames like Zen 2 can and does.

The current gen consoles may be 4.5 years old now, but they are nowhere near outdated like the 8th gen machines were from day 1.

I'm talking relative performance

jaguar became a meme because high end desktop CPUs was 3x-4x faster than it. and guess what, high end desktop CPUs at the moment have started to become 3x-4x faster than a zen 2 cpu

and that is with 3600 having more cache and higher frequency than consoles (a 3700x wouldn't change this result much)

if something that is 3x faster than a 5800x launches tomorrow, I'd call 5800x a jaguar tier performance CPU too. just saying.

The latest dlc and ps5 pro patch makes the game really pop. Hilarious that my 5 yr Olds favorite game is not only GOTY but also a graphical banger. They make it all seem so effortless too.

This game is as good as any 3d mario platformer to come out in years and is better than mario odyssey.

is today opposite day?

Astrobot running at locked 60fps.

Meanwhile technical sites with some other game: "this has to be 30fps because it needs to track all these potatoes, you also need to upgrade your PCs cause it's demanding"

Astrobot has some very nice physics and simulation going on under its charming exterior and they're talking about pushing all this on a low power CPU.

Yeahhhh I actually have and played the game, Great that you are impressed with such standard of physics and simulations I guess.

Lies! Heresy! Just because you got a good game and love Sony doesn't mean it's as good as the pinnacle of 3D gaming, Mario Odyssey. By any metric, reviews, user reviews, sales, ANY metric you can possibly imagine in your entire lifetime Astroboy is a pimple on Mario's Peach popping ass my guy. Sony needs to give Astro some moves next time to improve the gameplay for non-lames, and the non-stop playstation celebration is so cringe, like one big ad. Astro was great but has room for improvement. Odyssey is perfection defined. You know it to be true. The insecurity in your comment reveals it to be so.

One thing I love about Astro Bot is that it used these physics & graphic features for gameplay.
Water making sponges bigger & smaller over time is basically "4D graphics"

The use of shadows for gameplay in some parts of the game is also amazing.

Clearly they didn't use CapGodAwful's optimization techniques.... Monster Hunter Wilds pushes even the Pro to its limits

Nah people in here says that Astro Bot hits the highest limit of PS5 tech here unlike every other PS5 games.

The power of PS5 can be used in many ways, in the case of Astrobot it is used for stable 4K and 60fps with good physics, other studios prefer to lower the resolution and increase the graphical load, Astrobot looks really good.

cool tech demos, now let's see it in a game
The first one is literally starfield. Those kind of blobby water effects came and went because there aint a lot of use to them. Even in astrobot its there mostly for visual fluff, since they could've just done it like portal 2 (and some would argue it looks better that way too)

"dude type in a console command spawn tons of toilet paper lmao"

And the example in the quote is literally a core part of the gameplay in one level.

folk in here are being offended so easily. Of course it's easy for Astrobot to push the PS5 to its processing limits; what do you think happens to a CPU/GPU when you put a million objects and particles with their physics in play? It has nothing to do with visual fidelity.

Aka, the game can do it without it even being intended. A much bigger flex than a game with especifically designed areas for it.

And it would've worked just as well with a "simpler" approach to fluid physics (with in fact levels where they did it since it would've been too much to do it entirely physically based), could've looked better too with some care since these blob liquids look weird without enough particles.

I didn't say the PC games were not capable of doing good physics. I said that no games are using it. And they're not. Tech demos are just that.

"just use a simpler opinion" - yea that's the point, they didn't have to. And don't diss the game just because it disproves your stupid point.

Noita, Teardown, Beamng, KSP, Wreckfest, Besiege, etc. They exist, plenty of them, you just never bothered searching for them because you don't actually care. Don't try arguing they're "obscure" either cause these all sold in the same ballpark as astrobot, if not more.

I'm not dissing the game, they did what they had to in order to achieve their vision and did it well. I'm dissing the people gushing over these effects as if its some kind of benchmark. There clearly is desperation for a "next gen" something to stoop that low.

looks slightly worse than physx from two generations ago.
theyre computing this on the CPU? why???
You can do either. PhysX supports either in a lot of games and the games autoselect CPU depending on engine and hardware you have. They don't have a beefy CPU to pick up the slack. And no it doesn't look worse than Physx from the PS3/360 gen, don't be silly.

All the PC games you mentioned run on a system with a worse CPU than a PS5. Noita just requires a “dual core” CPU. KSP is on PS4 FFS.

To circle back, the point was for the smoothbrains who claim the PS5 CPU is “crap”, there aren’t PC games leveraging their awesome power to do amazing things that can’t be done with this crap CPU.

Most of the games i mentioned are scalable, which is usually the case with physics-based games. KSP was on ps4 but ran like crap and had part limits.

With better cpus? Larger, more complex constructions become possible. Astrobot would also run on a ps4 if they trimmed down the number of physics objects.

Man these most of you guys obsession with “high tech graphic” sucking fun out games for yourselves…….its no wonder most of you can barely enjoy any game and keep making threads about “gaming sucks now”.

Why do you guys do this to yourself?

I am baffled by your logic. Jaguar was outdated out of the gate. You are now comparing 2020 CPU with 2025 CPU.

People without technical expertise gainsaying people who actually do have experience and insight, what maximizing resources on a given piece of hardware constitutes is embarrassingly stupid.

But who care if it is pushing PS5 to limits or not, the fact it’s doing something fun with tech to give fun experience but no only thing GAF cares about is if it’s using ray tracing or hight texture or other nonsense.

And then they go back complaining why games are less interactive.

Well yeah. It shows. The amount of interactivity with the environment is fantastic. Some of you have forgotten that video games are supposed to be fun and whimsical sometimes.
For most people who obsess about graphics they care less about interactivity and more about they can take screenshots at their game to show off to say “oh look the game looks like CGI”.
