The games industry ‘will only have room for one non-Nintendo console next gen’, it’s claimed

The games industry will only be able to support two successful game consoles in the next generation of hardware, a new report claims, and one of those will ‘clearly’ be Nintendo.

Market research firm DFC Intelligence released its annual market report and forecast this week, in which it projects major revenue growth for the second half of the decade, while predicting significant risk for one of the three established console manufacturers.

DFC predicts that, thanks to new hardware from Nintendo and major releases such as GTA6, the games industry will enjoy record growth in 2025, following a period of decline following the Covid 19 pandemic.

The firm predicts that the number of people worldwide who play video games will exceed 4 billion by 2027 – nearly half the global population. It projects that Nintendo will be “the clear winner” in the next generation of consoles, due largely to a combination of earlier availability and limited competition.

However, DFC projects that only one of Sony and Microsoft will be able to successfully compete with Nintendo when their new consoles launch by 2028.

“There isn’t room for more than two major console systems,” it says. “Sony or Microsoft will struggle mightily in a distant third place – largely depending on which of those companies can gain early momentum.”

DFC believes it’s too early to know which of Xbox and PlayStation will drop off next gen, stating that price points, launch dates, and other basic features such as portability, will factor.

“A new Sony system (PlayStation 6?) should have an advantage because of loyal base and strong Sony IP,” it says, while noting that Microsoft will go into its next console as the largest gaming publisher.

“Microsoft failed with Xbox Series X/S but has made major acquisitions to become world’s largest software publisher. Microsoft has the option of focusing on software and distribution models over hardware.”

DFC Intelligence founder and CEO David Cole said in a statement: “Over the past three decades, the video game industry has grown more than 20x, and after two years of slumping hardware and software sales, it’s poised to resume growing at a healthy rate through the end of the decade.

“While 2025 will mark the beginning of that upward trajectory, some huge questions remain, including who will lose the next-gen console war and who will win the game software distribution battle. And with the large publishers focused on live services around evergreen franchises, opportunities for smaller studios will be plentiful.”

Nintendo has yet to officially reveal its Switch successor, but the company has confirmed plans to do so during its current fiscal year, which ends in March 2025.

The Nintendo rebound and success story post-Wii U and 3DS is amazing. They're the only hardware manufacturer that is confident in what it's, knows where they're heading, doesn't relying on a AAA and microtransaction bubble, and skirts around all the industry drama and politics.

Nintendo is probably the safest of the three when it comes to future viability.

Consoles are not really needed anymore tbh.
I think there’s some truth to this, but I do think there will always be a dependable audience of people who don’t want to use a PC in the living room. That’s probably the only reason consoles are going to survive for a while yet.

This could change quickly if Valve tries to introduce a proper Steam console, though.

The market just hasn't really grown in terms of hardware install bases; PlayStation and Nintendo ate Xbox's marketshare. Xbox failed to differentiate itself from PlayStation such that it's fallen into irrelevancy from a market perspective. Nintendo produces the low cost, low end device, PlayStation produces the high cost, high end device. Xbox doesn't do either better than both so it's basically been pushed out. PlayStation has managed to produce "growth" by charging more, delivering less, and pivoting to produce a large number of remasters and remakes to keep bringing in the revenue while it's selling more or less the same amount of hardware. But this coming generation will be the last one where PlayStation can show growth without the market actually growing; once its finished curb stopping Xbox, all they can do is either go after Nintendo's market, or, keep jacking up their prices until people literally just stop buying.

Consoles are not really needed anymore tbh.

I enjoy coming home after a long day and turning my ps5 controller on as my console boots up instantly and hitting a button on the controller as my game boots up instantly from rest mode. I don't have to worry about anything or screw with anything else because the process is seamless and i get to relax while playing games on my 65 inch 4k tv. Console gaming is ultra convenient, easy to use, and i love collecting physical games and putting them in the disc slot of my ps5. I wouldn't trade my ps5 for a pc any day of the week. There's millions upon millions of people who feel the same exact way and they don't care about gaming on a pc and dealing with the hassle that comes with it.

To be honest i feel the only reason we will get a next gen Xbox is because of the Xbox users that have accounts with tons of bought games and dlc etc. I kind of agree that Nintendo and Playstation would be enough going forward, especially as everyone knows now that Xbox exclusives will come to Playstation, even if its months later. I dont think a few months exclusivity would be enough for poeple to pick Xbox over Playstation.
There is Gamepass of course but thats a sub service that you can simply unsub to if needed. Plus i wouldnt be surprised if Gamepass ended up on Playstation in the future.
There is nothing really else to differentiate both Xbox and Playstation consoles with 90% of games being available on both.

Even though i havent owned a console since the 360 and PS3, it would still suck for me of Xbox left the hardware business. A lot of good memories there for me from the orig Xbox and the 360.

Wow, what a hot take. Guess we should all just ditch consoles and pray to the lag gods of cloud gaming, huh?
It is definitely a hot take in the near term, but longer term, the console business is rather shockingly stagnant when it comes to user base growth, and this article is further proof of that: if there are projected to be 4 billion people consuming some amount of gaming a bit over two years from now, you'd think the console+handheld market could at least carve out a 10% niche of that audience. But no one is predicting such explosive growth for any of the big 3. This article is predicting the exact opposite in fact!

What does that say? I'm a diehard Nintendo fan and I don't think anyone is seriously expecting the Switch 2 to break 200 million sales lifetime. Is anyone expecting this from Sony?
Hopefully I'm mistaken.

Wow amazing future analysis there, that doesn’t even factor in current market performance. Xbox is in a necro free fall, but still has a fighting chance apparently - is this an American market research company per chance?

Or the fact that Nintendo is given a free pass, even though history shows their systems can be hit or miss (I think Switch 2 will be fine, but still).

I don’t think any of them gets a free pass or are “safe”. Nor do I think consoles are going anywhere anytime soon, but this is Patcher level analysis imo.

The entire thing is a piece defending Xbox. it is bullcrap. There is plenty of room for three consoles, we didn't have a problem for a decade.

This is just a classic "Xbox failed because they stood no chance", a way to make excuses for Xbox's failings. There will be a new console to replace Xbox, and if they play their cards right they will get support.

Has Nintendo ever had two successive generations of success when it comes to hardware install base? Seems like they're always hot and cold with hardware sales since the NES, but pretty solid with software.

If history repeats itself the Switch 2 may falter behind if it's just a Suped-up Switch with not much else going for it.

With Sony, it's clear they're returning to the handhold market according to the Bloomberg report from last month, and after the success of the Portal, they'd be stupid not to capitalise on it with a hybrid console/handheld + multi-SKU model for PS6.

Next generation will be a battle of philosophy, where the winner will be decided by how the market shifts. Will they go full digital with Microsoft's 'everything is an Xbox' strategy, or will they stick to what they know with mobile gaming & dedicated consoles?

Gonna be crazy when ms officially pulls the plug.

Hopefully everyone gets on then? Or will it turn into Sony vs nintendo.

That would suck.
I dont think they ever will. Availability might be reduced to fewer markets and MS store only. But I think there will always be an option. What that option is in the future of course isn't clear. And it might sell very low volumes, but I think there will be something for the foreseeable future.
