The games industry ‘will only have room for one non-Nintendo console next gen’, it’s claimed

The time has come

It's an interesting report, but their Switch 2 hardware sales are wayyyyy too optimistic.

The entire thing is a piece defending Xbox. it is bullcrap. There is plenty of room for three consoles, we didn't have a problem for a decade.

This is just a classic "Xbox failed because they stood no chance", a way to make excuses for Xbox's failings. There will be a new console to replace Xbox, and if they play their cards right they will get support.
I wouldn't say it's defending MS. They clearly stste they failed with Xbox Series and don't say "they stood no chance ".
Has Nintendo ever had two successive generations of success when it comes to hardware install base? Seems like they're always hot and cold with hardware sales since the NES, but pretty solid with software.

If history repeats itself the Switch 2 may falter behind if it's just a Suped-up Switch with not much else going for it.

With Sony, it's clear they're returning to the handhold market according to the Bloomberg report from last month, and after the success of the Portal, they'd be stupid not to capitalise on it with a hybrid console/handheld + multi-SKU model for PS6.

Next generation will be a battle of philosophy, where the winner will be decided by how the market shifts. Will they go full digital with Microsoft's 'everything is an Xbox' strategy, or will they stick to what they know with mobile gaming & dedicated consoles?
GB to GBA was a successful transition.

Consoles are not really needed anymore tbh.
Bahahaha!!!!!

Okay my guy, why is a PC needed for gaming?

"needed" is your key word.

Console is a luxury item. When is any luxury item needed?

It's like saying, "we have perfected the mouse trap, kittens are no longer needed." Well sorry my guy, but can we keep them anyway? Your PC isn't convenient enough yet and it also costs too much. I've worked in IT for 20 years and built over 20 gaming PCs. This is you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Modest_Proposal

wait, what's the logic here? 3DS which was cheaper than Switch is somehow going to be outsold by Switch 2 which hasn't even met DS numbers?
Even during a down period for Nintendo they still moved ~90 million units when you combine 3DS and WiiU. Historical trends for Nintendo consoles don't matter since they consolidated their hardware.

I'm not clear why they conclude that only 2 consoles are possible next gen, when 3 consoles were possible this gen, and last gen, and the one before that... They don't say what will change that suddenly makes 3 consoles implausible.

I'm also stumped by their inability to say which of the two, MS or Sony, is most likely to struggle in the console space next gen. That seems pretty obvious.

Microsoft has already dropped out of this generation, so it can’t be them! 🤣

But seriously, this is what Microsoft knows internally. That’s why they’re pushing for PC/Play everywhere and cloud initiatives.

They’ll still need to offer a next-gen console to push their Game Pass titles unless they can convince Nintendo and Sony to accept the full service on their platforms. That would probably cost a lot and increase service costs for consumers by about 40% unless they make some publishing deals.

I also think apple will continue to slowly advance their gaming agenda with a new Apple TV. They could actually be a disruptive force by bundling an Apple TV and controller combo.

Yeah, it could be that they've allowed the Switch to stagnate for so long that it's no longer on people's radar, and we're heading for another Wii U.

I can't remember the last time I picked up my Switch - not since Tears of the Kingdom, I think. It's sitting in the dock, fully charged, but my daughter played maybe 20 minutes of Mario Kart this year.

Switch 2 is going to need some killer launch games for me to consider an upgrade.

I would argue that three consoles weren't possible this gen, but look, there used to be like 10 competing PC platforms. At least. Eventually by the mid 1990s there was only one. This is the inexorable tendency towards monopoly in this economic system.

Switch is having a much slower decline than what the Wii did and the next platform will have several advantages over the Wii U.

So it's unlikely to be a complete disaster. But it's also unlikely to do 90 million in less than 4 years (as this report says).

I do think Nintendo should have launched Switch 2 this year though.

Nintendo releases underwhelming tech

The industry: "You can stay"
Indeed, because it fills a gap. PlayStation covers the core console, Nintendo the mobile/younger base, PC is everyone else plus the other two sprinkled in.

That’s exactly how this gen has played out too. Xbox is the kid that wants to be PlayStation, thinks it can buy Nintendo, yet is the spoiled/abandoned grandkid of PC.

Weird article.

I mean right now Sony and Nintendo are the dominant consoles and go after different markets and each do well in their respective areas but Xbox is clearly the odd man out. Why are they even remotely suggesting Microsoft is still in this race?
Because they don't want to predict the future? What if Microsoft buys Valve, and they next Xbox runs steam and allows you to play PS games on it? Not saying it will happen, but no one can guarantee it won't either.

What if Microsoft buys Nintendo if that’s the case that we include rampant speculation unlikely to happen?

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Which console are they referring?

If it's the Switch 2 then that's a Ninth Gen console, it won't be competing with PS6.
it's competition will only be the PS6 if it doesn't overtake the PS5 before the PS6 releases.
And if it does, the PS5 will be it's competition.
That's how it works... right.

Three consoles were possible this gen because Microsoft has the money to fund the Xbox regardless of losses. Xbox is mid. If you have a decent PC you have an Xbox. If you want a console, get a Playstation as it will get Xbox's games anyway and you still have Sony first party. Although it seems if you wait you can get them on PC also. If you want first party, you can't get anywhere else get a Nintendo console.
Basically, it you have a PC and a current Nintendo Console, pretty much the breadth of gaming is available to you. Everybody has a phone if that's what appeals to you. Xbox is just a box with no identity of its own. You're getting a box that doesn't have anything unique in its software library and missing out on games from Sony and Nintendo in the meantime.
