The story, as someone pointed out, is a sequel to the Journey to the West Novel. However, if you aren't familiar with it, the story in the game, you cannot make heads or tails of it. Furthermore, the Old Monkey who narrates the beginning is an unreliable narrator, making the game even more confusing. If you do know what the hell is going on, the story is quite interesting. Again though, it's seeped in Chinese culture, history, and religion, so for westerners, it just seems confusing and nonsensical.
Its basically like God of War, nobody gets it unless they know the Greek mythology.

Bruh maybe they just like the game?

I'm spanish and if someone made a Don Quixote soulslike about fighting giants and rescuing hookers I'd vote the fuck out of it.
Bruh there is an entire rabbit hole of this. I'm not even gonna bother going into it, since it has already been talked to absolute death in the official topic when the game came out. Not to mention, the VGA incident where bunch of chinese keyboard warriors attempted to review bomb the fuck out of Baldurs Gate 3 after Sven's mistranslation, causing nationalists to think he was bashing their country's beloved game and mythology, etc.. etc.. etc...

Long story short, the game is alright, much like Lies of P but there is nothing that screams originality from Soulsbrone style game. The game also winning narrative award is cherry on top. Clearly this game won the popularity vote on steam.
