Turns out there are IP fans, not genre fans ...

people like something insofar as it is familiar. There are people who play Pokemon and hate JRPGs. There are people who play Mario Kart and hate racing games. etc.

not a lot of people are willing to give many things a chance- thats why first impressions are real important!
Yeah that sort of makes sense. Like, I'm not a big fan of 'Slavic gas mask FPS' genre but absolutely love the Metro games.

I couldn't give two shits about STALKER but give me news on a new Metro game and I'm as giddy as a school girl.

And this is what boggles my mind. If you are a Resident Evil fan ONLY and not a Survival Horror fan - because if you were, you would have bought Dead Space, Silent Hill 2 and Alone in the Dark as well, and not just RE games - why ARE you a Resident Evil and not a Dead Space fan? Why did you become an RE fan? It mustn't have been the survival horror aspect, since that would've made you to buy other SH games as well. Was it the zombies? The local setting? Leon's haircut? Jill's boobs? Whatever it is, it must be something a lot more superficial than gameplay and game design, otherwise you'd have bought those other games as well.
For better or worse - RE has been the defining IP of horror games for several decades (in terms of popularity). Also - none of the other IPs were ever in similar popularity bracket (especially not SH - cult status and all - the series was just never a great seller).
And the example you gave - 4 remakes from each respective IP competing head-2-head - is there really any surprise that when the offer is 'nothing new, this one is for your nostalgia' - the one that sells the most by far is the one that was most popular to begin with? Hell - I'm personally not overly attached to any one of the IPs - but if all that's on offer is remakes - I'd start with DeadSpace and SH over the others any day, simply because that's how I remember originals.

And yeah, I know that Dead Space Remake sold a couple of million, but it's still grossly less than RE4 or RE7.
If you ask me - that was already too much (and it's beaten the original game sales too afaik). It's among the most disappointing horror remakes/sequels this gen.

I have known this for some time. IP is oddly powerful in the SP space.

True gamers care not about IP.

Even in the MP scene there is not a lot of crossover between Fortnite and similar titles.

If you take Fortnite out of existence, Battle Royale is still the most popular genre on earth.

Fortnite grew into the juggernaut it is today without being a well established IP.

There is core game design that is healthy and vibrant and draws a player base. Then there is hollow, played out game design that requires the flesh of a popular IP to be draped over its face so it appears healthy.

Sunset Overdrive and Spider-Man (2018) show us this.

What it boils down to is actually gameplay. Resident Evil is, to the best of my knowledge, the only survivor horror games to really nail down the gameplay loop. The minute to minute gameplay needs to be well executed and fun without letting any horror aspects overrule it; or if it does, it isn't for an especially long time. Yes, leaning too hard into the scary stuff can be detrimental. Dead Space is in fact great and fun but eventually the consistent jump scares get old and annoying. Silent Hill 2 is a brilliant story but it eventually becomes tiresome not being able to see more than 10 feet in front of you during gameplay. You know what doesn't get old? Fun, satisfying combat encounters. These aren't little 1.5 hour horror movies that are over quickly. There needs to be plenty of tension release and downtime to catch your breath in a 10-20 hour scary game. At least if you're looking for more widespread exposure and sales.

I have no opinion about the recent Alone in the Dark as I didn't bother playing it. I have no interest because whenever I've tried a game in the franchise it's been pretty bad and it's been that way since the 90s. Also, there are a great survivor horror games that exist outside of the big name ones. Signalis and Crow Country are fantastic survival horror games released in the past couple years and I have my eye on Conscript as well but they will never the approach the popularity of the big names.

People like good titles. Good works. Good art. Some of those my fall into the same category, but that doesn’t mean that you have to swallow every mediocre shit is released within the same label. You like Powerplant and Dawn of Victoty and someone is like “Hey! You like epic metal, then you must like a lot everything that Blind Guardian has perpetrated since A Twist in the Myth”… Where the fuck is the logic in that?

A great character design is very important that it should be marketable. Like say if you like FPS who would you rather choose the Concord people or some other anime hero shooter?
The other crazy reason is the game title, the "Alone in the Dark" is a stupid title for me & I'd never touch that.

I am not saying that a JRPG fan should go and buy every JRPG under the sun. But shouldn't they at least buy the top 5-10 JRPGs?

No they shouldn't, and your logic and reasoning are flawed at basic levels. The issue here is with your inability to process how other people view things. You are also transferring your behavior onto others. I don't care for most survival games, nor farming games. But I love Minecraft. The reasons for that and other IP/Genre selections are varied. The intersection of gameplay loop, art design, sound, etc. all hit the right note for me in ways that other IP/Genre entries do not. It isn't that difficult to understand.
