[Verge] Windows 11 is now the most popular OS for PC gaming

how you know it broke old games?
Well there's all the reports and issues on it but there also my own experience, it randomly broke the old Assassin Creed games, they worked perfectly fine but after 24H2 I had to go back and track down some old redists and install them to get the games working again.

It seems like one of the the changes brought on by 24H2 messed up how older versions detect it properly in the registry.

Not had any issues on W11. It was buggy as shit the first year after release so I went back to 10 for a while.

11 isn’t as bad as people want it to be. Remember when people hated 10? Now they refuse to leave it.

Later this year most people will move to 11 and realise it’s not that bad. You’ll still get those stubborn idiots who are stuck in the past.

Once Windows 12 comes out you’ll see the same thing happen all over again. Windows 11 is the best! I’m not moving to Windows 12!! It sucks! :messenger_unamused:

GTFO with that patronizing BS.

Just because someone doesn't want to upgrade/change something, doesn't mean "they are stuck in the past". WTF does that even mean?

W11 has enough issues and changes compared to W10 right now for someone to decide it's not worth bothering and it might be better to wait as much as possible.

It's not like changing the whole OS is a 5 minute deal, especially for someone who uses the computer all day and is used to a certain work flow they don't want/need disturbed.

If you used your computed for more than just games, you would know how W11 has made unnecessary changes in the UI and the way you interact with the OS that were standard since Windows 95 so it's not as easy of a transition as win7 to win10. Not to mention all the bloat that's at the worst level it ever was. And sure, there are tools that can mitigate all that but again, changing the whole OS after using it long enough and having to fix it on top of that is a lengthy process and i'm not going to change it for the sake of it. Everything i need works fine on w10 right now so why would i want to go through all that now?

I don't want to let myself become a free beta tester for Microsoft but you are free to test it for me though.

I don't get it, so instead trying to block or delay 24H2 update people are uninstalling and going back to Win10?

Edit: Ah, okay, I get it now. It's because of a large wave of new Chinese players since W11 technically isn't available there.

Hysteria aside, what are the prospects for continued use of Windows 10 after October? Did MS ever announce extended security coverage for the wind down of previous Windows versions? Are there other things we can do?

My PC is ready for W11, but my son's is going to need a decent amount of prep which I really can't be bothered to face.

Had to replace aio (lian li galahad warranty), and windows unable to go past enter pin on welcome screen. But it allows to download restore copy instead of using usb flash drives and was able to start from scratch again.

Eh.....I don't think most people think Windows 11 sucks. There just isn't a compelling reason for them to upgrade. Windows 10 works perfectly fine for them so why upgrade? For the sake of upgrading? Simply because Microsoft wants them to? Yeah.....fuck that.

BTW.....Windows 11 is still Windows 10. Go to command prompt and type systeminfo.

And they would be exclusively be playing those games without ever logging to steam?
Tbh it's kind of hard to say.
Around 2010, there were around 150M active players in 'just' US and China and Steam represented a fairly small fraction of all that, with 10M MAUs.
Today Steam alone is approaching that 150M mark - but I no longer have access to estimates of what gaming population globally might be.

That said - I'd argue Steam represents a rather good statistically relevant sample - so irrespective of 'how many other players' are out there - distribution of OSs is likely pretty accurate as is.

Windows gets progressively worse and worse with each version. Microsoft are doing it deliberately that way. It's also the reason Windows 11 exists in the first place (after all the promises that Windows 10 would be the "last Windows"): They are boiling their customers slowly so that they don't recognize that they're being boiled.
Windows 12 will just be slightly worse when it comes to bothering people to log in with an account at all times, hiding system settings behind hard-to-find menus/the registry, integrating "AI" and ads etc.

Do fans of windows exist?

I mean... people often admit they have to use this OS for many reasons, but what about love?

Windows 12 might actually be good, and you're wrong, 10 was good, 8/8.1 was bad, it's the Windows cycle, 11 is a bad one.
