[Windows Central] PlayStation says Windows PC is not a "major risk"

While I mainly game on Windows PC and within the Xbox ecosystem, that doesn't mean I have some kind of dislike for Sony. My second favorite game of all time, right behind the original Red Dead Redemption, is Uncharted 4. It's another title that's been available on PC for years. Therein lies the problem.
PlayStation, like a child being dragged out of the store by their parent for being naughty, has been reluctantly releasing its games on PC. Often without fanfare, and with some taking years to launch on PC, the pace has gradually grown. Just this year, their biggest hit, Helldivers 2, was a simultaneous release on PlayStation 5 and PC. An experiment that will likely end up changing their strategy.

The future of PlayStation games is on Windows PC

Forgetting about the mobile market, which is already the largest and is set to grow, PC gaming continues to grow at a steady rate that hasn't seen a decline in years. With PlayStation sales trending behind its former console, what exactly does that mean for the future of their games? The answer? That phrase everyone argues about: day and date on PC.

PlayStation moving to "day and date" PC launches is coming

The inevitable third game might just come out on multiple platforms on day one. (Image credit: PlayStation Studios)
I don't know why so many argue against this, but days of non-simultaneous PlayStation releases are nearing their end. Said end won't be tomorrow, but with every year, we get closer and closer. Last year, the success of Helldivers 2 pushed the company to admit it would be releasing live-service titles everywhere all at once. Tomorrow, there will be some other game that will cause Sony to rethink its strategy yet again.

I have a PlayStation 5, but I generally wait for game releases on my Windows PC. They're coming, so why not wait for them on my preferred platform? Sure, some absolute bangers might come out, but what first-party titles have there been on PlayStation that haven't come to PC as well? For 2025, we have Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei, both sequels that have already seen their predecessors come to PC. In the case of Death Stranding, Kojima Productions even launched it on Xbox for the added income.
PlayStation manages to make more money on other platforms every year than it did the previous year. In 2024, I would bet they almost reached a billion, if not over. In the pursuit of higher profits and better margins, it only makes sense to continue tightening that release schedule until the "day and date" PC launch become the norm. Trust me, it's closer than you think.

What do you think? Is Sony growing closer to day and date on PC? What about games coming to other platforms like Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S? Let us know below in the comments.

Why grab PlayStation games on PC?
It used to be that if you wanted to enjoy a PlayStation exclusive game, you needed to buy the latest console. That's not the case anymore, with a growing list of PlayStation Studios games on Windows PC that keeps on getting bigger. PlayStation has even invested to make these ports better, acquiring Dutch studio Nixxes to deliver masterclass PC ports.

In conclusion, if you have a Windows PC and an Xbox ecosystem, PlayStation is not necessary.

That’d be nice but cross platform saves would be nice too. I just bought Gow rag on Steam and it’d be nice to use my ps5 save there instead of starting over.

I would bet large amounts of bank SP games will come to PC day and date just how soon?
I wouldn’t bet on that, but I do think the window will shrink. To be honest, it’s a dangerous game Sony is playing. We’ll see what happens, but if they ever do it, it’ll be years from now.

Unless, of course, you heard something that we haven’t?

I wouldnt bet large amounts of bank if I wasn't overly confident

Not many hills I tend to plant my flag on

This is coming

I brought it up with Topher Topher in another thread as I knew this was getting talked about (again) in other channels

Naw Sony has the Pc release timing down perfectly. They keep console sales going by keeping exclusives on the consoles for a few years maintaining sales and then releasing them a few years down the line for double dip and PC money. No reason to shift from this and put the console brand in trouble which is Sony's priority.

It will come day and date to PC when Sony launches its own PS Store app on PC. That's the only way I can see it happening.

Dangerous how?
If they are planning on releasing day and date on PC as Heisenberg is alluding to. Maybe I'm overestimating the overlap. I don't think there is or has ever been that much and firmly believed that 1 year of exclusivity wouldn't hurt the PS brand, but day and date? Not sure about that.

It is defintley dangerous game.

When you look at both MS and Sony one taking this risk makes sense whilst the other doesn't.

MS gains from pc gaming as windows currently is lead os for gaming. Not only that ms as a whole is a much wealthier company who can take a hit with such risks.

Sony on the other hand has nothing to fallback on. They aren't exactly pumping out big games regularly to be a big publisher like ms. Lose playstation customers and they are fucked.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
I don't see Sony putting their own store on PC. Didn't work for EA, didn't work for Ubi, and I don't think anyone is buying stuff from the MS store either. Plus, their games are already on Steam so yeah, don't see it. Specially if they intend to put mp behind a paywall like on the console.

Those are the marching orders from ms 😆

They are scared to death their fanbase will be moving over to playstation.

The reality is, that is what will happen on mass, most console audience are casuals who want simple.

Even if console only, don't. You will literally save decent money within a few months. They always go on sale. Even Nintendo games now go on sale.

It's a good point, PC games are cheaper and the online is free. Until the PS3 era the appeal of the Playstation consoles were the high amount of exclusives, but now 98% of good Playstation games are on PC.

Day 1 Playstation games on steam would be amazing, it needs to happen. 1st party studios must ramp up on PC development rather than outsource to Climax, Nixxes, Iron Galaxy, etc.

And this is why Sony was so stupid to do what they did. Squandered a platform they built up over decades to get some cash short term. This killed Xbox and it will kill them, except they don’t have windows and office.
No good games killed Xbox. Sony doesn't have that problem.

After this generation, I have my doubts I'll get another PS. All of the big studios that made the consoles for me failed to meet expectations (SMS, ND, Insomniac). And SE are going multiplat again with FF.

I can wait for ports. If they are coming even faster, then great.
