These idiots, who up until that point tried to make semi-faithful war games, made a World War II shooter where one of the allied units is a disabled woman with a prosthetic arm running around smacking zee zermans with a paddleboard.

In a way this was a tipping point because it was just so over the top nonsensical and everyone knew it was included for pandering.

At the same time Activision was making COD WW2 which, imo was a blast of a fun game, and didn't have any of the woke shit in it.

Battlefield went from an instant buy for me to a wait and see game. In fact I think BF5 (on sale for $5.99) and MW1 were the last multiplayer games I bought.

Only a few years later did they inject it with wokeness for COD vanguard. And now you have hoochie momma Minaj rolling around with snoop dog in a ww2 game...

BF1 started it all with dice and having the Recon soldiers be black men even though WW1 was an *almost* entirely white conflict.

Just watch it again and take note of the scene in the building where she gets hit by something and falls against the wall.

I just try not to publicly agree or disagree on this board about political things. I have to deal with the crumbling of the world around me too much in my regular life.

I really love talking about the intricacies of things like gameplay mechanics, design, rendering tech, retro advancements, etc etc. And it’s not that I can’t talk about that stuff here (I can and do), but there’s only so much active real estate on a forum, and I get bummed that so much of it is taken up by political stuff that, in my opinion, doesn’t really lead anywhere; it’s mostly complaining, on both sides. (And I’m guilty of that as well.)

So I try to gently push back against that when I can, usually through jokes and whatnot.

But I really, really miss the days where this forum was filled with countless developers and vets, and served as a direct pulse to the inner workings of the industry.

I don’t blame GAF or anyone here for the shift, though. It’s basically happened everywhere that I love to talk about my hobbies.

I just personally don’t see anything tangible or useful coming from echo chambers; without balanced perspectives and debates, no progress in any direction can be made. And in that absence, I’d much rather just talk about the intricacies of gaming.

Just my two cents. I still love everyone here and think that GAF is fuckin awesome.

BFV developer Alan Kertz (Design Director at DICE) said that he knew adding female soldiers was going to be a fight, but it's the right time to do so. He then pointed out that other World War 2 themed games are available for those seeking maximum authenticity.

Alan Kertz, currently Design Director at DICE on BFV and previously credited as a designer on every mainline Battlefield game since 2142, replied yesterday on Battlefield's Reddit channel and revealed to have pushed for BFV to be more inclusive.

I knew this was going to be a fight when I pushed for female soldiers in Battlefield. I have a daughter, and I don’t want to ever have to answer her question of “why can’t I make a character that looks like me” with “because you’re a girl.”

I fundamentally feel to my core this is the right way and I will find myself on the right side of history.

And I think many people will play the game despite their reservations. And maybe learn something about either history or themselves. That is part of the making games art.

I can’t speak for that timing, I know personally that I wasn’t in a position of enough influence to make it happen. I also know a lot in society has changed and for me personally I grew up a bit and looked at the world with new eyes. From within the industry we’ve seen so much male domination, for whatever reasons, and I work for a studio and a company that recognizes the value of diversity in what we do as game makers. That’s been a big deal for me also.

Sometimes just enough things come together to make it happen. It felt like an inevitability. The excuses were running out and the support was there... so it happens now.
