See, your A conditional has already been met, and it's questionable at this point if your B conditional will ever be achieved. There's nothing at this point indicating that the Wii owners will ever seek something meatier than Wii Sports and Wii Play.
Okay, so we're equating the just-launched and supposedly successful Wii with a failure of a console that's been dead for two years. Check.

Zelda isn't as big in Japan as it has been elsewhere, though TP is down from Wind Waker, which was down from Ocarina of Time. Several reasons to believe Super Mario Galaxy will do better, though:test_account said:Isnt Zelda mega popular in Japan? I always thought that. *New Super Mario Bros. makes Mario particularly hot recently.
*Super Mario 64 was more successful than any Zelda game in Japan.
*Even SM64 DS reached a million, which I don't think any portable Zelda has done.
*Not competing at launch with Wii Sports; will instead have a userbase much larger than Sunshine did at release.

I think we already determined 300K to be that number. No more, no less.TheKingsCrown said:Can we please determine a sales number that is officially "failing", because selling 400k of a game might seem like a failure compared to New Super Mario Bros., but was it a profitable game to make?
I'm guessing because it is a port of a DS game which I believe sold pretty well in Japan, better than in the states where I had a lot of trouble even finding it. In contrast, Trauma Center for Wii has sold very well in North America I believe. So it could be that people just didn't want to buy the Wii version of a game they already owned on DS at full Wii price.FlightOfHeaven said:Why is Trauma Center so low?
WW sell through to consumers, I'd say, roughly:Nuclear Muffin said:Anybody got any rough idea what the Wii, 360, DS and PS3 Worldwide LTDs are now?
Yeah, the PSP games aren't as high as expected, maybe they'll pick up over the weekend.Kurosaki Ichigo said:First day sales (from sinobi):

NDS Suujin Taisen - <5k
No number for PS2 Hisshou Pachinko/Pachislo Capture Series, Vol. 10: CR Neon Geneses Evangelion but that one looks to be the top1 game next week, previous one did 210k although its doesn't look like its going to beat that.
FF2 doesn't look like it'll as good as FF1 (50k first week), same for DBZ SB2 (first one did 60k first week).

Harvest Moon has sold okay. I think ~80K lifetime is possible, which isn't bad for Wii's first game. The DS games have increased healthily over the last couple of years, so I expect the same for Wii.
Well that depends totally on the game. How much dev time was spend, how big the team was, if cutscenes etc. were outsourced, marketing and all that stuff. It's true though that the unbelievable success of some DS software has pushed the bar up high and a lot of people seem to expect big budget software titles to replicate that success.TheKingsCrown said:Can we please determine a sales number that is officially "failing", because selling 400k of a game might seem like a failure compared to New Super Mario Bros., but was it a profitable game to make?
No, some guy a few months back (lancestern?) used to say 300K. No matter what.Wiitard said:You mean for HD games, right?
Phife Dawg said:Zelda being in development for such a long time and occupying a pretty large team in the process could be considered a failure if it sold comparatively to the japanese level worldwide. I'd consider it a failure in Japan. But as others have said, it was definetly geared towards western taste. Hell, even I thought it was too brown overall :lol .
Stumpokapow said:400,000 units at 20 bucks a unit is 8 million dollars. Assuming that Zelda sold similarly in Europe and North America, that'd be 24 million dollars. This would almost certainly exceed the break-even point; this also does not include profit made on Wii systems sold because of Zelda.
So, economically, even if Zelda did the same worldwide as it did in Japan, it would not be a failure. Certainly in terms of expectations, Zelda was at least a small disappointment in Japan.
Nope, it was a ground up release, just like this. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii version cracked 100k either, maybe even pulling a bit further, like 120-140k.Magicpaint said:Didn't that one manage to crawl to 100k though?
