Is Arc the first turn based traditional RPG on the Wii?

I know there was ToS (Action), Fire Embliem (SRPG), DQS (waggle fest), Fragile (would we call it an RPG?), Kizuna (crap), Oppona (don't know)

If so, it does not bode well for the genre. Arc is a well made and positively reviewed game in a popular genre. And if it is as front loaded as most of these games are this title will have a tough crawl to get past 40k...

Really Japan, what is your beef with quality Wii games?

Basara, Sky Crawlers, Another Code, Disaster, NMH, Klonoa, Tact of Magic, etc.

I know a lot of these were not advertised well or were aimed more at a western audience but surely one of these deserved to crack 50k right?

jj984jj

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
Arc Rise did a bit better than I expected, which was bomba (not even or barely 20k), but MMV's low expectations and all the other wii 3rd party bombas really lowered my expectations there. I wonder what Sega is expecting out of Infinite Space? That I'm expecting total bomba for, it seems really niche. :(

Well, I suppose there's always hope that Arc Rise has better legs than your average RPG...

I suppose what's most important is that it will probably match/exceed MMV's expectations, which means that it will at least have performed well for them.

On the plus side, 358/2 Days is selling extremely well.

As charlequin would say, this game's initial shipment of ~36K requires it to result in such poor absolute numbers. Can't buy 100K copies when 36K are ordered by retail. :/

Is Arc Rise Fantasia a new IP? It would go some way toward explaining these numbers.

Yeah, it is.

The debut compares to the developers other new IP RPG published by Marvelous (Luminous Arc), which is at least something worth looking at. For that reason, I doubt they'll look at Arc Rise Fantasia as a failure.

I missed all the pre-release banter on this one. What's the story there? Low expectations due to it being a new, difficult to advertise IP, I suspect.

If Arc Rise Fantasia is half as cool as it's letting on to be it deserves at least 5x that opening week sales number.

Yay at Gyakuten Kenji!

Poor Arc Rise Fantasia, but at least it did better than I expected (15k was guess). The important bit is if MMV considers this a success.

Go go KH!

I checked out a few game stores last weekend and ARF was sold out, although that doesn't really mean anything I suppose. Oh well.

It sold ~70% of shipment, that seems pretty much dead on for retailers meeting demand. I'm sure if retailers had ordered 100k then there'd be endless crowing about how it doesn't matter if it only sold 25% of shipment because Marvelous already got their money. Hell, I'm pretty sure if it only shipped 10k and sold out there'd be crowing about how it's in huge demand.

At this point I think some posters will only consider it a bomb if it actually explodes and burns down the store. And even then it'll get spun into a victory because the storeowner really wanted to retire and now he'll get that sweet sweet insurance money and can chase teen girls just like in that comedy anime series: Old Man Pervert Chasing Teen Girl Comedy.

True, how about:

Really Japanese retailers, what is your beef with quality Wii games?

Still if they did buy 100k copies it is hard to know if it would sell more. They would probably up their ad space and have some in-store kiosks or something though.

But yet, it will likely sell enough for MMV to make profit. But probably not enough to establish this as series. It is probably not a financial bomb, but it is in no way leading a charge for traditional console RPGs.

Maybe I am just getting tired. I defended the sales of Fragile (no advertising), Disaster (made for the West), Basara (Wii version more expensive), etc. But now I feel like I am just making excuses and I don't want to do it anymore. There seems to be a real problem with the way Wii softw.....

Oh crap!

Am I becoming Link?

Gyakuten Saiban returns at #30. :D

It's interesting, especially since it's essentially a game from the 2001 GBA days with a few additions.

Hopefully post Monster Hunter 3 there will be a bigger market for core gamer titles on the Wii.

Everything will change after 1st August 09, everything!

That is true. I bet some of the gamers getting Wii for the first time might buy some of the games they missed. But there will be tons of used copies of Arc by then.

Hm.

I am torn. On one hand, Kenji selling well is good for the series and good for Capcom.

On the other hand, if it sells for quite a long time, they won't announce GS5 anytime soon. :(

Please, if they're iffy on GS5, it's because they're trying to figure out how not to piss off the people who hated GS4 (for a whole variety of reasons) even more.

Slow times. Actually, that's really the calm before the storm, since Monster Hunter 3 + Black Wii and Dragon Quest IX are coming.

Srsly. How long are we going to keep giving excuses after excuses whenever a third party Wii game sells poorly?

I expected better from ARF. But hopefully it holds up a bit in the second week...

Worth noting that while these initial releases were at a similar time from each system's launch, since DS had been exploding since late 2005 Luminous Arc was selling to a userbase of 15 million.

Sadly with Arc Fantasia, it's very difficult for console RPGs to sell on a console before a heavy hitter like DQ or FF hits first. I believe that assuming the Wii is still kicking, console RPGs will become more accepted after DQX.

That said, sucks for Arc Fantasia, looks excellent. Here's hoping the US release fares better.

had small initial shipments and were sold out.. its unfortunate that the companies behind them did not have the courage to put out more copies but i dont think it was a financial disaster for them either..

I suppose the glass is half full thinking is all 3 are coming to the US, if a game bombing in Japan means we get a quality release of it in other countries I guess I am all for the bombs.

Does this retroactively change the perception of what some early JRPGs achieved on 360 (eg. Trusty Bell's 70k, 44k first week)?
