Media Create Sales: Week 12, 2017 (Mar 20 - Mar 26)

Terrible month for Nintendo eShop sales with Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 Professional the top 3DS title with just 8,766 sales and Minecraft the top Wii U at just 1,619 (which means you only need to sell around 400 to top the eShop charts - the fact most new releases don't chart means sales must be scary low).

Strong Sony digital sales with Assassin's Creed Unity at 133,943, Assassin's Creed 4 at 126,689, Let It Die at 63,675, Nioh at 43,724, NieR:Automata at 38,180 and so-forth. Okami will do the full list shortly as that's not my thing!

Sounds bad but i still dont trust those estimates as far as i could throw them

And my god at the Switch. Is it safe to say its actually picking up Wii U and 3DS sales? Or is it too early to say?

Right now Switch is absorbing fast the audience that is attracted from Vita. Looking it as the new high-end portable explains partially its sales despite the lack of software.

This is highly encouraging. Now, I'm really anxious to see Switch sales data once MK8 and Splatoon 2 drop.

When has the last time a console was announced to be discontinued and it increases in sales...

Damn PS3, we see you.

Same thing happened with the PSP and that jumped up to like 10K.

I should have said thats an actual question, lol

Guess I better pick up a PS3 now before its discontinued in the US.

If it can sustain sales like this Nintendo can say bye bye to the 3DS. Go all in on the Switch.

Nope it's not picking up both 3DS & Wii U sales yet. It's currently still tracking behind both Wii U (launched in holidays) and 3DS week on week. Until Nintendo/third parties announce typical 3DS powerhouses are coming to Switch (mainline Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Monster Hunter, Level 5 games, etc.) it's not quite there yet. Initial sales are promising though.
Edit:... but Chris says otherwise...

It is? Wasn't the Vita dying off already prior to Switch launch since Minecraft finally slowed down?

If the switch continues to sell out with Zelda being the only big release than the first year for the switch will be huge. I thought sales would taper off a lot before Mario kart but it seems like at least for another week it continues to be selling out despite increasing supply. If his continues through to Mario kart you would have to think that would carry the switch for a while longer. After splatoon hits I think we're going to see big numbers to finish he year.

Mario kart, Zelda, splatoon, Mario, DQ and possibly monster hunter and Pokemon to finish the year (plus any other unannounced games). It's going to be a big year hopefully.

3DS continues to sell well in spite of he switch release, will be interesting to see how long it can keep it up.

PS4 also still selling well. Overall the market looks pretty good at the moment.

It is? Isn't

If sales keep the current trend, it might not be too long before Switch catches up with 3DS: the Golden Week period could be the time when the Switch will obtain to recover a lot of territory against the 3DS, due to the latter's sales for that period.

Wait, Assassin's Creed Unity sold 134K digitally in Japan just in February 2017, or are those lifetime?

Wait that isn't even as discounted as I would have thought. That is an incredible figure if it was any more than like 1000 yen.

That puts Unity and Black Flag as the most sold console games digitally in a single month, and by a pretty large margin, greatly outdoing the 500 yen Battlefield 4 sales, and their discounts weren't as steep.

They also outsell all of digital games from 2016 but Battlefield 4 and the Pokémon VC release, are among the 15 most dowloaded games there are and PS4's top downloads after Minecraft and Battlefield 4 again.

Monster Hunter is still the king in digital, not even Assassin's Creed got close.

Battlefield 1 saw great digital ratio, so potentially this year's Assasssin's Creed game will do the same.

Vita has showed incredible stabilitty at sales every year, low but around 1m. 2017 will be the year of collapse.

I agree with that statement (was stable and now will collapse in 2017), but I don't get why you think that it's the Switch that's caused this instead of the Vita just finally running out of steam due to lack of titles? Minecraft pretty much carried the machine for like a year right? Like I said before to others, I'm still failing to see what titles that Vita players were buying are seeing similar type games on Switch except Dragon Quest Heroes I+II. I agree that the form factor is appealing to Vita owners, and it does encapsulate the Vita + Vita TV concept pretty well, but the overlapping software, in terms of released and announced titles, just doesn't seem to be there at all yet.

So what are the chances of an Ubisoft game passing, say, the 500k mark? It seems like they're developing a decent enough following.

Assassins Creed Feudal Japan, maybe?

Unity triples its LTD with digital, Black Flag quadruples it, Unity is now Ubisoft's third best selling game in Japan and their second best selling Assassin's Creed game.

With digital now we have:

Nioh at 200k

Rainbow Six Siege at 250k

Nier at 300k

Resident Evil 7 below 350k

Minecraft on PS4 at 450k (Wii U version is at 486k, PS4 version will outsell it sooner than expected)

GTAV on PS4 at 460k, I mentioned in January how it'd likely surpass the 500k mark and outsell MGSV by January 2018, but its going to happen before the end of June.

What is the point of a proper account system again? If the system is not compatible with the previous systems software, why should it matter if the software is transferable or not?

Lack of important titles or saturation for Vita after all these years, there aren't other alternatives anymore if someone wants to invest to the high tech portable market. It doesn't make any difference if Switch has or hasn't share at Vita collapse this year.

There's no way Zelda BotW won't be clearing at the very least 500k on the Switch alone. It's just going to keep selling. Nice.

A remake of what is considered to be one of the worst entries.

I wouldn't say it was the worst. It was definitely considered a black sheep much in the way Zelda 2 is considered to be. They just changed a lot, but it's still got heart and soul.

Also question for anyone here, could BotW end up being the best selling Zelda game in Japan?

It will be nice to see it hit 500k. I'd love to see Zelda somehow get bigger over there, but I also realize that Zelda is just bigger overall in the west.

Since this topic comes up a lot, Koei Tecmo general manager Yasutomo Watanabe shared his thoughts on where their consoles games are getting targeted region-wise: http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/nioh...i-tecmo-as-it-eyes-the-western-market/0180503

Watanabe also tells us that Nioh is Koei Tecmo's ”most successful title in the west."
With Koei Tecmo's native market narrowing down, though, looking west seems to be a natural, next step for the publisher: ”The Japanese market is very strong so far as mobile games are concerned. However with the console games market there are some issues and currently it's not the key territory for console game sales," Watanabe concludes. ”Simultaneously, the western and Asian regions have been growing in importance and so our focus is gradually shifting towards them."
So what is Koei Tecmo's strategy to appeal to western players then?

”One of the most important things is to conduct solid market research to identify global and regional trends that can be incorporated in our own development engines," Watanabe says. ”We would also like to pursue partnerships with established brands or IPs to appeal to a wider audience and to grow our brands further."

He continues: ”Personally I'm happy to see a lot of Japanese games hit the charts in the west, however there's no border for entertainment and most people don't care where a game comes from; they only care if it's fun.

”We are proud to be a Japanese game publisher with unique content and approach and will continue to strive for success in the western regions. Thanks to A.O.T. Wings of Freedom and Nioh, a lot more gamers are now aware of our company and are interested in our releases. Next year and going forward, we plan to release big titles for the western market."

Well KT has to hope Nioh isn't just a lucky fluke. The Musou brand is close to death in Japan if Musou Stars (and the past few collaborations) is anything to go by.

Also question for anyone here, could BotW end up being the best selling Zelda game in Japan?

I think that BotW's biggest triumph would be to outsell Twilight Princess, specially considering both were released under nearly identical circumstances, both being cross-gen, even more impressive cause TP is a Q4 release while BotW is Q1.

Passing Skyward Sword is a given, quite an accomplishment in itself considering Wii's install base at the time of its release.

I don't think it will reach Wind Waker though, that seems impossible but we'll see what kind of legs it shows through the year, who knows.
