Media Create Sales: Week 6, 2013 (Feb 04 - Feb 10)

Hardware can only get you so far when there's next to nothing on it. Never understood people buying a system for its specs when that has nothing to do IF games will even come out on it. At least with any Nintendo system you will get high quality games from Nintendo.

Some people just have different tastes. It's obvious the market completely disagrees, so honestly it doesn't matter what a few people want.

I think people buying a gaming system soley because of the specs is a myth. I would say that it always come down to the content. The specs are what makes the games possible.

3DS beast mode is nuts. With MH4 and Pokemon XY this year plus whatever else it should be their best year yet.

Maybe in a year the Wii U will improve.

Third week in a row Wii U sells less software than Vita (and counting).

How many software releases have Wii U and Vita both had in the last three weeks?

...or 3DS. The devices have very different libraries. Personally I'd say the iOS library was closer to the Vita library than the 3DS library is.

What are some of the best games (or your favorite games) on the Vita, and what games comparable to those titles are currently available on iOS that are not comparable to anything in the 3DS library?

Tank! Tank! Tank at February 21st.

Then another whole month of nothing until NFS:MW comes out.

cant see tank selling anything seeing as the freemium version is already out (might hit 43 in the chart if its lucky) nfs may do better due to software starvation especially now seeing as it looks like the first real effort port, how did the ps3 version do?

Agreed. 3DS smokes 'em both pretty easily. :)
Dude, I'm sure you feel that way and more power to you. That's exactly what I'm saying though, the libraries are very different. If you dig one, you probably won't dig the other. You can't replace a 3DS with a Vita and you can't replace a Vita with a 3DS. That's why it's such a shame that only one of them is commercially viable.

I'm not a fan of the Sony cross-play initiative. I'd rather play all of those games on PS3. I'm also not a fan of Nintendo's cheap/lazy approach to hardware. If I could take their software and put it on the Vita, that would be my ideal handheld experience at this point. As it stands, now I mostly game on an iPad Mini and occasionally on 3DS. Anyone that says the iOS devices are lacking in games is willfully ignorant or just blind.

When you have a free market this is what happens when your product fails to be appealing to a wide audience. You think it's coincidence that every Nintendo handheld has dominated with weaker hardware specs compared to their competition?

Here comes Baconsammy to talk about US data in a Japanese sales thread again, everybody get prepared for zingers like these.

It wasn't just for the hardware, I was excited about the games they announced for it as well. Its a combination of the two. The idea of playing Wipeout, and Uncharted with great graphics on great hardware was more appealing to me than playing Mario and Pokemon on outdated hardware, with outdated graphics. Part of the appeal of any games to me is how advanced they are. Nintendo might be able to make really good games for an 8 bit black and white system but im not really going to be interested in playing them.

08./00. [PS3] Need for Speed: Most Wanted - A Criterion Game <RCE> (Electronic Arts) {2012.11.15} (¥7.665) - 13.383 / NEW

First week sales. yeah Wii u version isn't doing anything. Also is this really about to turn into a Vita vs 3DS library topic? Dave has already acknowlegded his tastes are completely different that what the market wants, so even drag it out anymore?

so you're saying thats a good thing?

I suppose you could see it that way. I suppooooose.

Didn't that game sell more than 2 million worldwide? Doesn't seem so bad to me. It's no Mario Kart, of course.

I have no idea what it sold, but I do know that over the 3DS's second holiday in the US, it sold hundreds of thousands fewer units. Not good. Software should be helping to build hardware sales momentum in the second year, not lessen it.

lol

Anyways, what happened to Famitsu report of 1M DQ7?

Shipped number.

When your big holiday release is Sticker Star, the only thing you're smoking is weed.

Vita's big holiday game was one of the most abysmal titles released last year. But if we're talking in a sales comparison, Sticker Star alone sold more than Vita's 2 big holiday titles.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

Unless I mention Vita by name, I'm not comparing the two. In regards to sales, I don't often compare the two since the Vita isn't fit to wear the 3DS's jock on its head like a helmet.

I don't think the specs being low plays any part at all. They dominate because they have Mario and Pokemon (and now MH & DQ).

Also is this really about to turn into a Vita vs 3DS library topic?
God I hope not. They offer different things to different people. In a sales topic, the 3DS library is the clear winner.

Like I said, it's no Mario Kart. But it performed well enough to be considered a worthwhile holiday title.

There's "selling great because it's great" and then there's "selling pretty good because it's all we got." Sticker Star is not great (opinion). Sticker Star benefited (opinion) from being pretty much the only high profile release around the holiday.

Edit: where are you seeing 2 million sold before and during the holidays? It sold OK in Japan and then quickly fell off. It charted very poorly in the US and Europe.

The low specs allow Nintendo to sell the 3DS at 15k yen which is a big reason why it is dominating. Even still the 3DS is not that far removed hardware wise (besides screen resolution) from the year it was set to release in (2010). Mobile device has advanced at an insane pace in the last couple of years and the one year gap between Vita and 3DS was absolutely enormous in terms of hardware power.

That argument only applies to launch titles. People won't buy shit games during the holidays when a platform has been out as long as the 3DS has. The novelty of buying anything just because it's there has long since worn off.

Q4 was rough. Thank fuck for Q1 and Q2 though, I'm picking up a ton of games now (Fire Emblem, Etrian Odyssey, Luigi's Mansion, Soul Hackers, MH3U, Animal Crossing, maybe Castlevania, maybe Sonic Racing, etc, etc)

I'll probably buy more in Q1 than I bought in all of last year.

I'm pretty confident that the 3DS would still be whupping the Vita even if they were priced the same. The library is too perfectly assembled and tailored to Japanese tastes for the Vita to overcome. Hell, you could probably charge more for the 3DS and still win handsomely. As we've already said a million times, a minority of a minority want the Vita, everyone else wants the 3DS. Hardware and services just don't matter to the masses.

The 3DS saw releases of Animal Crossing, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Fantasy Life, and Professor Layton VS Ace Attorney all within a month of Paper Mario's release - all falling around the holiday - so WTF are you talking about it being "all we got"?

If the 3DS had stayed at 250 alongside Vita without a pricecut we could have a much more competitive scenario if a few 3rd parties had switched over to Vita. Sure it might not be selling 70k a week, but it wouldn't be the disaster it is now. Low specs have afforded Nintendo the opportunity for the last 18 years to be in the mass market price range.

Presumably there is a mix of western talk in this topic since people seem to be comparing libraries.

The discussion you're jumping into was more general than one specific region. If you're talking specifically about Japan, the situation is obviously much different. If you talk about all regions, the software situation around the holidays was anemic at best. And that shows itself very vividly in software charts that show Mario Kart and SML3D charting while new games appear low on the list or never at all.

Yeah, the 3DS (announced 2010) is roughly on par with the iPhone 3GS (top-of-the-line 2009 smartphone) with the added benefit of being a closed platform. It's probably their most up to date portable design yet.

Are you saying you're surprised when someone starts talking about the western market releases from November-December in the Japanese weekly sales thread?

This is a JAPANESE SALES THREAD.

The discussion within the thread turned to a more general discussion. I didn't start that divergence, but I commented on it. Tangents often sprout up within threads, and this one was related to sales so at least it's semi-on topic.

I think that depends on the type of hardware/services. People seem to be willing to pay premium prices for Apples hardware and services. Moreso than cheaper alternatives.

This.

What a horrible game. I fear the pretty good sales for this shit means the next Paper Mario will be a non-RPG, item using snoozefest as well :(

Then go onto Club Nintendo and do the survey and say what you didn't like. They read that stuff. Try not to use hyperbole so they can take you seriously. ;)

I wonder to what degree Nintendo follows critical reception to their games. Not the surveys, but actual critical response from mags/websites.

Um I don't believe you. I did the XL survey and put that the reason I got the system was to play Super Metroid and Super Mario RPG and neither are on the eShop yet. All lies!

Note, since these draw only from the top 10 they do not represent smaller titles.
e.g., software sales of zero are assumed if the console has no games in the top 10.

Tally of the number of titles for that platform in the top 20 for each week.
I can't find the top 20 for PS3's second week. It has been assumed as zero.

Feel free to criticize or point out mistakes.

Well I assume they do follow them to an extent.

Haha. They did read the Super Paper Mario survey to determine that people didn't really care about the story.

Anyways, sorry for going off-topic.

That's why people should never expect the Wii U, or any console, to be the Wii. It's obviously the exception and not the rule.

No one is expecting this. Iwata himself said that the Wii was lightning in a bottle. Who said that the Wii U was going to be doing Wii numbers, or are you just making stuff up again?

He said that's why people shouldn't expect Wii like numbers, he did not say that people said they expected Wii like numbers.
