[Reuters] Exclusive-Sony in talks to buy media powerhouse behind 'Elden Ring', sources say

NEW YORK/TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony is in talks to acquire Kadokawa, the Japanese media powerhouse behind the "Elden Ring" game, two sources familiar with the matter said, as the technology giant looks to add to its entertainment portfolio.

The talks between the two sides are ongoing and, if successful, a deal could be signed in the coming weeks, the sources said.

Sony declined to comment. Kadokawa said it cannot comment.

NEW YORK/TOKYO, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Sony (6758.T), opens new tab is in talks to acquire Kadokawa (9468.T), opens new tab, the Japanese media powerhouse behind the "Elden Ring" game, two sources familiar with the matter said, as the technology giant looks to add to its entertainment portfolio.

Sony declined to comment. Kadokawa said it cannot comment.

As of 0608 GMT, Kadokawa's shares were bid-only at the daily limit of 3,745 yen.
Sony already has a 2% stake in Kadokawa and a stake in Kadokawa subsidiary FromSoftware, the developer of the hit fantasy role-playing game.
The fantasy title is a collaboration between veteran game director Hidetaka Miyazaki and "Game of Thrones" author George R.R. Martin.
Kadokawa began as a publisher in 1945, but has expanded franchises such as "Re:Zero" into games, anime, events and figures. Its market capitalisation was around $2.7 billion prior to the Reuters report.

Known as the inventor of the Walkman, Sony has transformed from an electronics manufacturer into an entertainment and technology juggernaut spanning movies, music, games and chips.
"Loveable characters and intellectual property (IP) can live for 30, 50 or 100 years," Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said last year.
"That's something we want to make investment in for sustainable growth," he said.
Anime is a focus for Sony, with its growth worldwide fueled by the spread of streaming services and greater familiarity with Japanese culture.

Sony, which has a market valuation of around $114 billion, in January scrapped the $10 billion merger of its Indian arm with Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEE.NS), opens new tab.

FYI, Kadokawa owns From Software. They also have a hand in lots of Anime productions, which Sony takes seriously as well IIRC.

This is big news if you are a Sony/Kadokawa shareholder. Not so big news for a gamer as I imagine all souls game will be multiplat going forward. I expect the Switch 2 port of Elden Ring to sell exceedinly well and Sony will make a big folly if they make From's output exclusive.
Bloodborne 2 should be easier to make if it goes through.

Yeah, they bought crunchyroll and effectively have a monopoly on anime in the west. If they acquire kadokawa, it will get even stronger and expand even in Japan. Plus, Sony will get access to anime studios( they don't currently produce their own anime, as far as I know).
Sony has A-1 Pictures (produced Sword Art Online, Nier Automata) and CloverWorks (produced Spy × Family, Bocchi the Rock) under Aniplex which is a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan.

it would be dumbest idea ever to make from software games exclusive . they sell really well as multi platfrom.
All games sell better as multi-platform. Yet we still get exclusives.

Though I don't think Sony will be making these games exclusives, only because Xbox will become irrelevant and Sony doesn't see Nintendo and PC as direct competitors. If Xbox continues to be relevant as a console manufacturer and a direct competitor to PlayStation, Sony will definitely make these games skip Xbox.

I sense fear in your voice ... ahahaha
I say this as a PlayStation fan. If you think I'm an Xbox or PC fan worrying about sudden Fromsoft exclusivity, I am not, and no one else should be. Sony have already displayed rank stupidity in buying Bungie at all, and then allowing them to continue supporting at least 2 competing platforms. They're not going to make the next Soulslop game exclusive.

My fear is that I don't want Hermen Hulst or Totoki or Sony top brass in general getting any big ideas about being a multimedia conglomerate where the gaming piece is just a cog in that machine. We see what that kind of position has led to with the Xbox brand.
