This would suck for the gaming community at large. But like usual, man-children championing their favorite toy company will duke it out in the trenches.
How exactly? I bet a lot of nuance is lost here. It's not ABK/MS style acquisition, the deal is not even helmed by PlayStation but by Sony Group. Kadokawa is an asset here, because if you'll look at their structure you'll understand that it's unreal to integrate the company so diverse into Sony even of Sony really wanted this. Let alone involve PlayStation. As with Sony's other arms, Kadokawa will probably just operate independently with rare IP-cross-sharing. Sony Music gacha games have nothing to do with PlayStation, for example. So for the gamer this deal changes very little (and once again, this deal is not about gaming in the slightest).

Honestly, I'm more concerned about the Anime/Manga side of this if it goes through... Sony's censorship of Anime and Manga is already known to suck so this will suck even more.

But seriously, back on script, do you think they'd prefer to stay under Kadokawa to keep the Xbros happy? This acquisition goes way beyond Dark Souls/Elden Ring and Xbox. Everything we've seen indicates that the employee of From Software will be far better off Under Sony leadership.
I can easily see a scenario where Fromsoft buys out Kadokawa's shares in it before this happens, or more likely gets some kind of stipulation where Sony must sell them those shares after the acquisition. Miyazaki is the contemporary Kojima, and PlayStation bent over backwards to appease both him, and a deceptively weak Bungie.

That said, Fromsoftware seems to be a footnote in this deal - this is more about manga/anime marketshare expansion than gaming. I still don't want this, because of what I said earlier in the thread: If PlayStation just becomes a cog in a deluded multimedia machine version of Sony, things are going to get even worse than they are now.

A match made in heaven. I’ve wanted this to happen for a long time and makes total sense

FromSoft makes amazing games, and Sony can provide them amazing technical engines (Decima, or Bluepoint)

Sony also provides cross media ability. Imagine something like an Elden Ring movie or tv series. Would be dope.

The parent company also provides rich anime content for Sony’s streaming service and IP portfolio

It would be an amazing get. To own from soft. It's a huge important studio now.

It will be interesting if they do and to see what happens when the dust settles and if Miyizaki leaves after a year or so.

So this is what they were waiting for to announce the Bloodborne remaster?:messenger_tears_of_joy:

Btw they already own 14% of it.
For Sony it makes sense because it's an acquisition that covers multiple businesses like games, anime and music.
We'll see what happens.

ok now make the ashen one non-binary. yeah that’s great. now what if they/them had a trans son who they/them cared deeply about so we can insert our GCSE level writing skills? awesome. ok last touch the combat should be very forgiving and if you mash square you should be able to beat every enemy in the game. perfection.

Because it is. Many creative in the Arts do not enjoy being owned by large companies.

It's not just tango. Plenty of studio talent leave after acquisitions. Tango was just one of many.

Sony isn’t going to dictate what they do. They are successful and thriving. And cheap to operate being in Japan.

All Sony is going to do is give them more resources and technical help for their projects and expand their IP across media even further

There’s no reason for him to leave if he retains full studio autonomy, just more support.

"Because it is" comparable.

"Plenty" and "One of many".

I await your 5 examples of an American Company being bought, where the result was a Japanese creative leaving shortly after, and then their entire studio getting shut down.

Used to be COD exclusive DLC and Early Access, now it's going to be Elden Ring 3 exclusive DLC and Early Access.

Jez making the crypost about it as we speak.

Uhm they are already owned by a large company.
Yeah, as far as I know that company doesn’t have its gaming HQ in California.

Sony are a very bad example, please don’t say they don’t try to influence their studios.

You think are all of their studios are working on the same style of games organically?

Creatives absolutely do not want commie ideology or as James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford puts it ‘technical help’ - as if they need it.

Sigh. Once again, this deal is not helmed by PlayStation, this is not a merger. This is asset acquisition by Sony Group that is already the largest shareholder of Kadokawa.

Would Sony group not defer the management of the gaming division (From Soft) to PlayStation? If not, great.

Interesting if true. Few years ago it would’ve been even more. Now, if it happens, it probably won’t change much. FromSoft will be still multiplat but maybe with some PlayStation time exclusives (or console exclusives).

One company can lost a lot though and I’m talking about Namco Bandai. Elden Ring 2 is probably secured (though Sony could break the deal, but I don’t think they would - it’s too comfortable for them regarding the multiplatform release) but after that?

Anyway FromSoft is worth as much as long Miyazaki is there (though the company itself has a bigger value then Kojima Production without Kojima probably). So it’s only one of the benefits of having Kodokawa.

I hope you're right, but I'm not optimistic that this deal wouldn't in some way hinder From's ability to continue offering their games on multiple platforms.
