I love that Callie and Marie have official lore. These two random NPCs, who only existed to add to the atmosphere of the game, now have a dark story going into Splatoon 2. And I'm guessing are a central part of the continuity between the first and second games. These developers have too much fun.

They actually were protagonists in the Splatoon campaign mode.

Were they? I played and 100%ed that campaign, but I honestly don't remember their role. I'll refresh my memory.

This is actually pretty cool. They appear to be taking a player-driven event (Splatfest) and using its outcome as the starting point for the Hero Mode storyline.
