Xbox refugees, will you repurchase games from your Xbox library on another platform?

Will you buy games you already own on Xbox on another platform?

This is a question for those who own Xbox but have decided to move to another platform in the wake of Microsoft's decision to prioritize their publishing business. Microsoft has many options to keep you on their platform, like Play Anywhere, XCloud, and Game Pass. Their PC releases also have a presence on Steam and other consoles now, with lots of options where players can go. Of course, everyone can stick with their existing hardware - I doubt Microsoft will pull support any time soon for their playerbase, even if support for Xbox hardware is diminished in the future.

I haven't owned an Xbox since the 360, but I would love to buy several former Xbox exclusives on other platforms. I tried to think what I would do if my Nintendo or Playstation libraries were affected instead, and honestly I would probably buy some of the games again on a platform I know would have full support in the future. I wouldn't replace everything, just my all time favorite games or multiplayer games I want to ensure there is an active community to play with.

My PC runs most of the games i would want to replay natively.

I did the opposite, actually. Re-bought a bunch of games I had on PS4 on Xbox and Switch, back when we found out about PlayStation disc drive issues of the future viability.

Now I have a lot of my favorite games both physically and digitally across multiple systems.

Why is everyone's Xbox going to stop working? 😵‍💫

No, but people leave when they see no future in the brand.

Trying to buy Dreamcast games on eBay, anything that came out after the console discontinuation announcement is hella expensive as a lot of people abandoned the platform after Jan 2001 and game sales really slowed down.

Same with Saturn, those consoles stopped working, but no one was buying those great 1998 titles like Panzer Saga, Burning Rangers or Deep Fear.

What ?! lol That's dumb. no one bought this Saturn games because they only released like 5 copies. Deep fear was never released in the US. 😵‍💫

The Xbox is digital so no game scarcity. And Ms will continue on with Xbox as a digital platform meaning your games will be available some where.

This is all silly fanboyisms.

I would only subscribe to PS+. We Xbots are closer than ever to toppling the current order. With millions of us helping to train the PS base as sleeper agents, it won't be long until you lose the ability to purchase anything. First we will destroy physical media, then all purchases. At that point our master plan will be realized and there will be no more libraries. We will blend in seamlessly with the PS audience so there will be no defense. You can't fight what you can't see.

I rarely replay old games, I might keep the XSX around to use my existing library once in a while but a lot is already available on PC via GP or Play Anywhere.

Doubt I’m going back to consoles now that I went through the effort of integrating the PC in my living room.

Our games will be available via cloud and on console for quite a while. You can also download your Xbox 360 games on your 360. I dont think anybody is scared of losing their xbox games anytime soon. And i highly doubt people are leaving xbox out of fear of the console dying.

I have already picked some physical versions of games I had on Xbox for the Switch. These are retro collections and smaller games, like Baten Kaitos, FF VII VIII, Tomb Raider, Cowabunga etc...

Going forward I simply don't see the need for anything else beside the Switch to be honest. My Series X has been a glorified dvd/bluray player for quite some time now, and it can't even do this well. My PS3 does a better job as a dvd/bluray player...

Modern video-games have worn my patience out.

I have a PC/PS5/Switch/XBSX. I currently play almost any Xbox game on PC. My plan is to treat Microsoft Gaming/Xbox like any other publisher. I will double dip on games I want to play on other platforms like PS5/Switch and not on games I play on PC/XBSX. It's not very complicated for me.

Xbox gamers don't have to repurchase many 1st party games thanks to Play Anywhere on PC so that's something.

I think the question might be better asked after MS reveals their next-gen hardware, and people know what their choices are. I wouldn't expect people who've stuck with Xbox this far into the generation to jump ship at this point. The vast majority will stick with Xbox at least through the rest of this gen. Doesn't make much sense to jump now - purchasing a new console, selling the old one, starting over - when you don't even know what Xbox hardware is on offer next gen. At this point, most people will be holding steady.

Personally, I wouldn't move to another platform, I am just too entrenched. For example, most other platforms have copied Xbox 360 achievements, but when I get an achievement in something like Steam it's meaningless to me, whereas on Xbox I'll actually play a game in whatever specific way is required to get an achievement.

When they shutter the Xbox console business, that's probably the end for me and (non-Nintendo) consoles.

Was a huge PlayStation gamer from about 2008 to 2022. Had all the Xbox’s during that time as well but I was a PlayStation gamer mostly. Sold my PS5 and got a series x and I’ll stick with MS however long they stay in the console business. I love older games more and do not care about Japanese games. Series X is perfect for back compat and the occasional new game I want for now.

If they don’t make newer hardware I would seriously look at PC gaming before going back to PlayStation.

Wtf xbox will have the same games sony has minus the exclsuives. You're going to tell me every single person purchases all the avail exclusives for their console of choice? This isn't the 90s anymore where shelf space is a premium and brick and mortal store get stuck with depreciating games that don't sell.

No. I don't rebuy anything because I keep all my consoles. But since I am a physical games forever kind of guy I buy more and more games for my PS5 instead. So I am slowly migrating towards PlayStation anyway.

Yet another fake concern thread about Xbox.

Does it make you feel better OP?

Look, there wont be any need for any of this as Xbox have already said they are taking care of future proofing BC and forward compatibility or whatever its called.

And for the people all the way in the back: they are launching next gen in 2026. Yes, there will be more Xbox hardware.

So hold on to your butts, its gonna be a bumpy ride.

I’ve moved to PC and repurchased some games where I want Steam versions. And I will go for the Steam version on The Elder Scrolls VI just as I did on Starfield, unrestricted modding.
But for the most part I use Gamepass, so no double dipping on the MS side of the industry as long as I have that.

Didn't vote. If you had asked me back in 2015 I would have said yes but this poll hasn't applied to me since because I've already shifted my library elsewhere.

You can believe what you want to believe, but I'm interested in people's opinions and the discussion. There has not been a major player to step back from the industry since back during the physical era. The major risk to digital libraries so far was the Wii (and to a lesser impact, Wii-U) where your purchases are basically end of life. Microsoft is taking a different approach with Play Anywhere and their push for multiple platforms.
