Digital Foundry: Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 PS5 Pro Tech Review - A Success for PSSR + Performance Boosts!

This game can look really good IMO.

Unfortunately that's only in Quality mode at 30 fps though .....while the Performance mode looks good compared to PS5's Perf mode, compared to Quality mode it takes a huge hit to texture quality and detail. Again, Performance mode doesn't look bad by any stretch but it sucks having to make such a big compromise on the Pro!

Compared to say, Dragon Age Veilguard, it's a big hit to graphics when switching modes ....the Quality mode looks incredible though I just wish Performance retained the high resolution textures and dropped resolution a little to achieve it.

Yeah, it kinda sucks.
Not suggesting to keep those settings on, as each screenshot can get extremely heavy, but for comparisons sake this is the only way to get those perfect, uncompressed screenshots.

Same way it's been for almost a decade on both PS4 and PS4 Pro.

The alternative JPG option unfortunately priorities file size more than anything, and usually results in massacred color depth other than heavily compressed detail.

I have to download the pic from the app and then upload to imgur. Pain in the ass.
Not sure if the App itself compresses the images, but Imgur for sure does and in a brutal way on PNG 4K screenshots.

It is a bit of a pain in the ass, but what I do is to transfer to USB and then upload to either ImgBB or PostIMG, even though the former has a pretty severe bandwidth limit so I wouldn't exactly recommend.

Thanks for the tips

I've included a 4K DLSS performance screenshot and a downsampled screenshot to show how this game should look like without TAA blur.

PC 4K DLSS performance

Great comparison, thanks. As expected DLSS is a bit sharper with more sharpening as both actually are resolving about the same amount of details. But DLSS is a bit more aliased (the backpack thingy of the main character, the weapon) and water is more pixelated on PC but overall they are both very similar.

This is really an impressive result for PSSR! in this game PSSR objectively performs about as good as DLSS at least in stills. Now can you do the same comparison in a scene with stuff in fast motion?

I can't make a similar comparison because I don't have PS5Pro (this PS5P screenshot was sent to me). However, I can say that the DLSS image has no shimmering during motion, and I've seen this with the built-in TAA and FSR2 methods. DLSS is also slightly less blurry during motion than other AA methods.

But I'm still not happy with the way DLSS looks in this game and that's why I played with downsampling. The DLSS is soft on the static image, and even built in TAA resolves more detail (if DLSS is implemented well it looks better than TAA). Perhaps the developers wanted to eliminate shimmering at all costs, and that's why they chose a blurry DLSS preset for this game. I can also see a very noticeable difference between "DLSS quality" and "DLSS performance" (if DLSS is implemented well, for example in Horizon remaster, I can barelly tell the difference between DLSS Q VS P).

As for the PSSR screenshot, the DLSS image seems to have more shader aliasing like you said (around jetpack), but I think DLSS resolves more detail. Buildings in the distance have more detail for sure, and sharpening mask cannot add such detail (sharpening mask adds just edge contrast, and that's it). Also textures look sharper, but maybe PS5Pro use lower texture quality. Pixelation around water should be visible on both, because SSR reflections runs at lower resolution when you use upscaling. This pixelation is more noticeable on the DLSS screenshot because the image is sharper. PSSR (or image compression) has blurred these pixels on the water surface, that's why pixelation is less visible. Water pixelation is still there, though, because I can see a square shape behind the blur. Only TAA native in this game resolves water reflections without pixelation.

I bought the game on PS5 Pro because of this patch and it's badass.

Good on whoever made this one. Fun. Reminds me of old school games. Graphics are silky smooth and beautiful, even if the screen is a bit busy.

I can't notice any frame drops on my LG OLED with VRR, it just seems to play perfect so far. Things like the writing on the shoulder pads is infinitely clear and super detailed, so it is impressive to look at, even after Silent Hill 2 which I thought was also amazing on the Pro.

I had originally read this game was janky, which is why I avoided it, but this patch seemed really impressive and I didn't expect it, so they earned my money and I'm glad they did. Game is great.

People on here complaining about lack of games need to play some of these like SH2 and Space Marines 2. These games are some of the best I've played! You have to play the games to find the good ones! "My Pledge is Eternal Service" or whatever...just badass.

You should have seen his Wukong ones:

Don't worry, even if there is a massive image quality uplift, all the motion related artifacts are gone and the fur is completely fixed, DF will complain that there are still minor artifacts in volumetric lights so overall it's just a small net win "pie_tears_joy: 🤭 🫣

Beat the pc version last night. Was awesome. Anyone have some ideas on how I should optimize my settings on it? I’m pretty new to pc gaming and the options in the menu confused me a bit. I have a 5800x3d, amd 6800, and 32 gigs of ddr3200.

I have 144hz tv with vrr. I’d like at least 60 fps

I commend base PS5 owners who play 60fps modes with such bad IQ. The Pro really brings to light how horrendous some of those games look.

Having toyed around with my pro a bit more I still think the IQ is poor in a lot of games outside of Sony's own titles. Most of Sony's first party stuff is pin-sharp on the machine, but there's still a lot of room for improvement from 3rd parties regarding their implementation of upscaling solutions.

But all of that is because I've got my PC glasses on, so maybe to the untrained eye this stuff looks good.

I don't know what it is this generation, but it seems like the developers don't give a shit about IQ anymore. Which is strange because it looked like we were really moving in the right direction at the end of the ps4/xbox one generation, especially after the respective pro consoles launched.
