I remember growing up on CFS3.

I had to make do with basic M+KB controls instead of a flight stick and we didn't have working speakers so I didn't find out what the game actually sounded like until years later, but 10 year-old me didn't care, he had a blast. I couldn't wrap my puny brain around the mechanics of dive-bombing so I completed most missions by enabling God mode and kamikazing into the objective lol.

Don't knock sims... especially space sims.

But yeah, any cockpit flying and dog-fighting based games are fucking great and I agree, they capture the essence of gaming as pure fun in a way that many other games don't.

And that's before you as the gamer have enough money and space at home to buy a HOTAS and build your own physical cockpit simulation station. That's when the real fun begins.

I tried getting into DCS with a full HOTAS setup but it's like a graduate level class just learning the different systems before you even get off the ground. If I had the time to invest I would fully commit to learning one of those planes. Arcade games a fun enough and we're overdue for an Ace Combat and Crimson Skies. Just wish you can scale the full flight SIM games down to play on controller for those that don't have that level of commitment yet.

We have had a lot of discussion threads on here lately about Ace Combat and some of the offshoots like Project Aces, but I want to talk a bit about some others that got me into the genre from my childhood. Retro throwback time guys.

This was my first experience in the genre and one of the games that got me into PC gaming. Excellent and not just for an old ass DOS game. You go from the Chair Force choosing missions from your clipboard, to loading up your aircraft in the hangar (choosing between armaments and fuel). Micro Prose developed this and you can tell by the sheer amount of strategy is this game - you had to ensure you would be able to destroy all targets and make it back to the correct airstrip in one piece, from takeoff to landing. The graphics were abysmal but for the time, it felt incredible. This was my dad's game on his computer, but once he taught me how to use it I was playing this like crazy (surely did not get far). The combat itself was nothing to write home about, and it felt closer to a sim than arcade combat, but I think it deserves a mention nonetheless.

First dogfighting air combat game. It played kind of rough on Sega Genesis with a controller, but it was still a lot of fun. It felt fast and frantic compared to F117-A and really got me hooked on the genre. I played a lot in third person mode and loved the aircraft carrier sequences. I distinctly remember the guided missile cam and ejection sequence when you shot down an enemy. It had a cool menu screen where you could see the damage done to your plane and your remaining missiles/bombs. This one had a killer soundtrack back too (very important in these games).

There's more I want to talk about that I'll post a bit later on, even though they are more space combat sims it's close enough and deserving of discussion.

I completely agree.
The Ace Combats and Sin and Punishment games are some of the true tests of gaming skill - right there with 2d shmups.
I find them to be infinitely replayable too - with always room to improve.
Simply put - videogaming cannot get any better.

We are in a new golden age of flight games

This shit is basically aviation porn at the current level.
... as long you spend a few thousand dollars in modules and equipment

And i'm still waiting for someone to fill the gap between Ace Combat and IL-2

The classics. Imho Freespace 2 is unbeatable.
GTVA Colossus vs Satanás

The genre basically peaked at late 90's early 2000 and disapeared.

If you're a fan of Ace Combat then check out Project Wingman. Basically the same thing and just as fun. Light on story though.
If you want to play a fun arcade chopper game then check out Thunder Wolves.
I played this back on the X360 and remember it being fun. Might revisit it. There's a 2nd one too called Battlestations: Pacific but was delisted from steam.

This game very underrated
It has it's quirks to make it work in w11, but is still awesome.

Pacific is even better.

Factor 5 going under was a massive blow to the genre. I'd love to see Project Aces step in with the Star Wars license...

Wonder what would have happened if Sony let Factor 5 make a Rogue Squadron game for PS3 instead of Lair...

Loved this game. Having to figure how to navigate to your target. Fly all the way there. Drop the bomb or dog fight. Then make it back and try to land. All while keeping an eye on fuel.

for me it's Macross Triangle F
Maybe only me, but i had fun with this game back then, there is (quite complex for arcade) simulation style option in the control side.
Though the graphic is simpler side, I had ton of fun there.

Back for more. Despite my interest in air combat type games, I never ended up playing any of the Ace Combat series until Shattered Skies on PS2. What the hell was I doing in the meantime? In space, yo. I am going a bit more in depth with these because 1) I remember them better, and 2) they are far better games. I personally think worth playing even today.

Both of these games are among the best combat flight sims out there, with a good balance between arcade speed and extra systems. In the Star Wars universe, no less, with several ships you never got to experience in other Star Wars games or movies at the time. It fueled an obsession with planes and ships that has continued to this day. These game's complexity when it came to gameplay spoiled me for the rest of my life.

My favorite and most memorable gameplay mechanic was the power controls - you could reroute power to Engine, Laser, and Shields as you saw fit. You could go heavy on shields, but that meant you need to slow your ship down or reduce the damage/recharge rate of your lasers. Or you could go high risk and reward and reduce power to shields and be lightning fast and powerful. If you ran no power to lasers or shields they would actually slowly decrease over time. You could also toggle your shields to balanced, forward, or rear facing on the fly, so maybe you have full frontal shields as you zoom in during an attack run and then flip them to rear to cover your ass while you sped away. Even the lasers had different firing modes, you could shoot individual shots or link them to fire two lasers at once (in an X-Wing you could even set it to quad lasers firing all simultaneously). This all mattered as well because you were able to highlight different parts of enemy vessels with your targeting computer, and if you destroyed certain parts it could actually effect the enemy. The same could happen to you, if your shield went down and your hull took damage it would actually knock out parts of your ship (and you'd see the damage). No more targeting computer or radar, you are flying blind.

Mission variety was incredible, some you would escort convoys, others you are assaulting frigates and missile platforms. Others were straight up dogfights. They gave you all kinds of cool weapons too, from super agile missiles (think QAAMs) to heavy duty rockets, ion cannons to disable enemy shields or non-lethally eliminate ships. You even got a tractor beam. And they debuted two of the best ships in Star Wars history: the Tie Delta and Missile Boat.

Both games also had simple but immersive point and click interfaces while you were outside your ship. I really enjoyed Tie Fighter's, you were able to chill with the Emperor, Vice Admiral Thrawn, etc - the game had voice acting throughout and it made you really feel like an imperial pilot. There was you usual briefings and loadout screens, missions with multiple objectives, and medals to earn as you progressed. Not only that, the cockpits were fully designed and you could change your view to look out the sides or rear and see the cockpit HUD for yourself, in addition to the first person HUD-only and third person ship view.

I could go on all day about these games, but point being they are very special - anyone who played them would know. And despite them being so old, there is value in playing them even today, if you can get them running on your PC. Highly recommended.

I'm still waiting the day Project Aces (Ace Combat team) makes a Macross game. Bamco publishes all Macross games. What are they waiting for?!

If you like Rail Shooters and Anime you should check out a new game called Rogue Flight. It's basically anime Star Fox with a ton of options, customization and extra modes etc.
