GAMEPUMP - Service cancelled, everyone refunded + 2 bonus apology games

I will stick with it. I just hope they actually do deliver the games.

No one has really talked about the fact that if their first game is delayed months... just think about the rest of them. We may be lucky to see game 4 or 5 by this time next year.

I hope my $20 isn't stretched too thin on that extended dev time ;)

Shame about the delay, but they're handling it extremely well.

I wouldn't say communicating a potentially three month delay by the 'March' reference half way through the launch day is handling the anything extremely well.

They clearly must have known about this for a while now, and not having Steam locked down way prior to not seems a large oversight on their part, not Valve's.

Where did they say that the horror game is one that released on both NES and MSX?
Because I did a quick search and there was a 'horror' game released on the MSX titled War of the Dead/Shiryou Sensen, that later got ported to a few other platofrms.

Sweet Home is really unlikely

1- It's not officially available in English
2- It's by Capcom which mean it would be expensive to license it
3- It's based on a Japanese movie which means more licensing

I don't even care it's late this is my first time hearing of this and this is sweeeeeeet subbed immediately

Edit: So I'm order #772, and assuming that is of $20 full purchases they have only made 15k~ so I wonder if that has to do with the delay.

So for summary - although $20 for 15 games (or 13 if you are a later sub) is still fine for me, here are some rather obvious amateur and dodgy issues.

- Service delayed and discussed only at the last possible moment, whilst clearly known of for sometime
- Advertised as for Steam games but now these are secondary to GOG and can be delayed vs GOG versions
- "Classic" is extremely loosely adhered to from what we know so far but is the focal point of the marketing
- Having to go through Greenlight for Steam
- "MSX not much different to NES versions" (nah nah nah fam!)
- Still failing to have an appropriate account system up in time
- No proper communication to any of the PayPal subs at all, even now.

You get what you pay for. Good thing this is throw away money on my part just to see if there can be any gems, much like gambling on a Xmas box of unknown games. Set expectations very low
I don't think this is any sort of scam, but I'm bewildered that anyone thinks they've handled this well, especially the first two.

And the notice that LiT and the NES game are "not reflective of the types of games you'll be receiving as part of your subscription" is baffling, when they'd previously all but confirmed LiT as the first (planned) game.

Sure, and I agree they should have said something before the actual day of, but at the very least they're giving out full refunds and two free games if you stick with them.

Games that while they say it didn't fit their theme, are still unreleased games.

Where did they say that the horror game is one that released on both NES and MSX?

It doesn't say that -- like I said about 10 posts ago, they had previously expressed difficulties porting NES games, presumably due to Nintendo IP claims, and so they had expressed a willingness to port MSX versions of classic NES games. That is what people were riffing off. There's no guarantee the game chosen is in fact a game with an MSX version.

Just posted on Twitter,

I'm going to stay on board, especially with 2 bonus games.

Missed this before. Signing up now, especially if the $20 tier is now 15 games (Lit + NES + "Bonus Month" + 12 monthly). Even if I don't like the majority of stuff, $20 for 15 games is a pretty sweet deal.

Oooof, I was considering signing up earlier today, and even though 20 bucks for what's now 14 (15?) games is a steal, I'm glad I didn't.

eh ill stick with it. the GOG option is real nice, and if even 5 of the 15 games end up being quality its a great deal. probably would have gotten a lot less backlash if they made this announcement two days ago

It's too bad they waited this long to say something, but 15 games for $20 is nice.

It is not clear whether we will get 14 or 15 games in the end. Edit: 15 games, it is!

So a delay of 1 month is somehow March?

This was weird.

At the same time, if they knew that development was behind on the games they should have said something.

This looks bad:

M2yIJng.png

It's likely they assumed they would be able to bypass Greenlight.

Still, everything looks very amateurish. They could've communicated far better

Bowling might have thought he still had the power he had with the Humble Monthly.

Also, it seems Lit is a new version, but based off the iOS version and not the Wii version:

4QYmW3X.png

Of course being a horror enthusiast, two bonus horror games don't bother me one bit. I will accept a built-from-the-ground-up take on the iOS LIT game, but to be honest I am disappointed it's not the WiiWare game. But I'll still play it and appreciate it being redone and updated with new content for PC release at least.

This is bad news.

I'm more than happy with GOG. GOG is great.

"Redeem on GOG or wait for a steam copy" is a bad way of handling it though.

This is sad for Steam users who might have to wait for 6 months before the game is greenlit.

Really disappointing about Steam keys not being a possibility. The promise of the service were that the games would be new to your Steam library and now that isn't happening. I hope it gets resolved within the first couple of releases because having to wait whilst GOG users get to play would suck.

Re-read. Steam Keys will be provided for each game, but a GOG key will be first and you can either take that or wait for it to get on Steam and get the Steam key then (though sounds like you can't get both, one or the other, which I can see being a publisher thing).

Yeah I understand that completely. My point was it's disappointing having to wait to play the games as somebody who wanted Steam keys. It's just unfortunate considering the service was actually built on this promise. It's just shit for someone like me who doesn't want to download the GOG version because it seems that would invalidate my Steam keys because you can't download both versions. If you could download both versions I'd have no issues but it's pretty disheartening that others will be playing these games for who knows how long before I can. Like I said, I just hope the wait times end up not being too long.

How are they even going to be able to port one game a month?

I assume most games are going to be emulated, with some features like achievements and controller support added on top.

I do wonder which approach Gamepump will take. Will it upload the games to Greenlight sooner rather than later, to best ensure that keys will be ready in time but consequently make the games known, or instead preserve the mystery and only upload a game once it's been announced as the title of the month?

Allow me to lol a bit. How could they not know what it takes to publish something on Steam? I will let my 20 stay for now, mainly because its not a big loss. Pushing each title thru Greenlight will take at least 4 weeks for each title, even if gets granted in just a few days.

They won't need to greenlight every title.

So, I'm confused. I bought the annual subscription thinking that we would get steam keys. But now they are talking about GOG, which I don't use/ I don't want to use or install. How long (after GOG keys are distributed) would we have to wait to get steam keys?

Let's say the first game releases in March, then steam users would have wait months?

I was excited about this since I loved the concept (old consoles classics on pc), but only if I can play them on Steam. i even promoted to all my friends, saying we would get steam keys for old consoles classics. Will every game be given through Steam eventually (receiveing the key later than other GOG users), or is there a chance that we might be stuck for certain games with GOG, because some games might not be approved on Steam marketplace? Because if there is a risk some of the games won't make it to steam, that would be unacceptable for me. I bought this because the promise was keys/games of old console classics on steam not on other services.

The started delay doesn't bother me, but this GOG/steam issue does. It doesn't even say how long steam users would have to wait on average.

It doesn't say how long Steam users have to wait because they probably don't know themselves.

I have a question. If their first game is greenlit, do they have to bother with Steam Greenlight again? I thought you didn't have to once you get a game out the door?

Yes, generally. Being greenlit isn't the golden ticket to being able to upload additional games willy-nilly. That's at Valve's discretion.

If it becomes an issue just accept it and use gog galaxy since it's very nice?

I don't want to use GOG. I mean all my friends use steam and my whole community is there, and I don't see why I should have a second app installed just for a few games when my whole pc library is on Steam.

Really disappointed by this. I'm not sure if I should refund or not. The two free games is great, and the deal 20$ for 13 games is really good. I'm also a fan of retrogaming and old classics, but this not having on Steam is really not acceptable since they promised they would give steam keys. They could just have said that at the beginning or at least in the last two months. I can't understand how they didn't know about this (or discovered this before) and the difficulty on getting released on Steam. What did they do in these two months since I subscribed? It look so amateurish that they didn't know about Steam release policy until now.

They really shouldn't have advertised as steam keys/games if they weren't sure they could publish games on it.

I'm still boggled by the choice to lead their bring-classic-games-to-Steam initiative with a port of a year-old iOS game.

I'm pretty sure the idea is that Gamepump is the publisher.

That was the idea, but Bowling was told that he'd need to go through Greenlight, and a title beng greenlit doesn't automatically entitle the developer/publisher to upload additional games. Being "promoted" to a fully-fledged publishing account that can upload additional games at will is entirely at Valve's discretion.

Joqu

It's not clear when or if they would, but steam can let you skip the greenlight process after your first few games at their own discretion so there's that

Probably mostly based on success?

i understand your disappointment and wanting all your games on steam but i'd just like to point out that GOG galaxy is optional and GOG kicks ass and having a vast library of games on both services is very nice as a PC gamer.

Wait... so if I want the games on Steam then I'm not allowed to download the DRM free version first and play it til it's there? I have to choose one or the other?
I want the games in my Steam library but also want access to them until (or if) they get greenlit there

If everyone joins me on my crusade of spamming their feedback form and their twitter with requests of Level5's Guild games, like CRIMSON SHROUD, then we might make Gamepump a worthwhile venture after all! C'mon! Who's with me?!

There's a lot of backlash regarding the position of steam keys be readily available. If I was them, I'd announce the NES game (month 2) right now, place the 2 games on greenlight, release the games under their banner and hope that you can bypass them coming into March.
It sounds like these two months are going need time building their establishment. Might as well spoil the surprise of the service and fast track your presence on steam.

duckroll

Member
I don't even understand the surprise really. For a launch of a new service you don't want to be completely mysterious. What they could probably do to attract a lot more attention is to announce the first 6 months worth of games, and use that as a hook to get people to get an annual subscription. They can also then put all those 6 on Greenlight and use that as a further means of marketing the entire service.

I have all of them too. This isn't about us. It's about spreading the love. One must not be small minded about it! Think about it this way. The day will come where the 3DS is dead. And the Nintendo eShop will no longer list 3DS games. What will happen then? Will these titles be forever lost to the world? No! They must be on PC! Make it happen! Join me brother!

To be fair, when I see their tweets, I fully expect either B-tier downloadable titles or NES shovelwares.
