Obon is yes a holiday but it is a time for remembering the departed. Any time that there is a longish break from school, hardware sales go up but this isn't a holiday that kids get money for and its not too much different from the summer vacation they are already on. Their parents may have a few days off though and they might get them a game or two during the big shopping days. But try to keep expectations reasonable. It's not New Years or Golden Week.

Fun note: In David Sheff's Game Over, he chronicles the enthusiast and press reactions to Super Mario World when it was revealed, and a lot of people were aboard the "This just looks like Super Mario Bros. 3, why are they so creatively bankrupt?" train.

Most people don't remember this because they were eight. But part of me expects some bitter gnashing of teeth in ten to fifteen years when people talk about how much fun they had with NSMB Wii and the older set go "NO IT WAS TERRIBLE DID YOU NOT SEE HOW PREDICTABLE THE SNOW LEVEL WAS"

Well said LOL. I think people forget what it was like when they were young. We weren't concerned with innovation as much as long as we got our new Mario and it was fun. New suits yay! :) I've come to expect that the NSMB line is aiming for the younger players and also the older ones looking for a throwback feeling. I don't really look at it as a mainline Mario title. Just a fun experience wich I'm fine with.

heh I don't think it will happen. Vita should be at approx 850k no?

Vita is at 873,185 according to MC, while 3DSLL is at 334,386 after 3(?) weeks. If both keep selling consistently (Vita ~10,000 with a bump here and there, 3DS LL >50,000) it'll be a close race.

is the XL counted as stand alone or sales are accumulated between both systems?

MC reports both the combined 3DS and 3DS LL figures as well as the individual breakdowns (like they did with the PSP & DS models, I believe). Check the OP.

I never scrolled down the little sales window...mind blown!

okay, then...Vita could reach 1 mil in 10 weeks selling 10.5k per week
3DS is currently at 334k, stabilizing at 50k for the sake of this game..bloody hell that would be hairy enough :p

At 10,500 per week Vita would cross the 1M threshold after 13 weeks (putting us in November?). At 50,000 3DS would cross the threshold after 14 weeks.

I used to play Mario as a kid not cos of the cool new suits or whatever but because of the daunting but exciting challenge of getting to the end. Surviving. Getting through the adventure and seeing what crazy thrills await at Bowsers Castle.

That's kind of been lost to infinite lives/saves, handholding, and a nonsensical or predictable world layout.

There needs to be fewer power-ups and 1ups. In fact, new suits is fun but kinda mitigates the difficulty level.

You could very well end up with two different winners, depending on the tracking firm being used. So unless there's a single winner that wins both tracking results - there's probably not much point spending much time on it.

This is very true. However, it's a little sad that a revision that's not designed to replace the previous model and released 3 weeks ago even has a chance of reaching 1M LTD before a colsole released last December only serves to demonstrate how dire the situation is in Japan for the Vita.

Right.

I remember the Gamecube. Do you?

Yeah, 2013 should be a good year for Wii U. It better be.

I don't understand why NSMB2 was needed, honestly. 3D Land sold 5 million copies worldwide, no? Why is it necessary to release another Mario so soon after? They didn't release another Mario the year after NSMB DS was released. 2 is just going to kill some of the momentum 3D Land has, and possibly eat away some of the NSMB U sales. Doesn't make any sense to me coming out this year.

Releasing NSMB2 3DS ensures that system sales of - either or both - 3DS and/or WiiU stay strong. Not everyone will jump onto the WiiU, so having a NSMB 3DS iteration removes consumer doubt on the handheld. If they aren't interested in WIiU, they'll say: "Well, I might as well get a 3DS, the system also has a NSMB game." if they want a WiiU, the same can be said. Portable gamers might not have an interest in a Nintendo console, and console gamers might not have interest in the portable.

I see the NSMB brand acting as a platform bridge, not so much as competing. It's smart of Nintendo to cover all of their bases.

It's also nice to see the platform soaring over the 7mil mark in JP.

Mario always spoilt you with bonus lives. If you were to learn the methods to obtain them.

Also, World had a battery that saved every three levels and all the predecessors allowed continues in the same world already.

Sure, nowadays they hand out the bonus lives more easily but if you were anywhere a medium experienced player you should never have had a problem to rack up 99 lives and then take ages to burn them all.

I do hope they'll make a conference as the one last year in September. That was epic, one of the best show ever, better than 90% editions of E3.

The most impressive thing about the conference in September wasn't really the conference itself; it was the Sony one shortly afterwards that stood in stark contrast to Nintendo's. Immediately after Nintendo's there were a good few people who were expecting Monster Hunter to be announced as multiplatform in Sony's show. After the end of Sony's when we realised that announcement wasn't coming, *that* was the bit that was mindblowing.

Well, I remember Iwata was almost scared in presenting one game after another one, there were like ten new announcements, plus a lot of other stuffs unveiled.

Obon is one of the most important Japanese traditions. People believe that their ancestors' spirits come back to their homes to be reunited with their family during Obon and pray for the spirits. For the reason, Obon is an important family gathering time, and many people return to their hometowns.

The spirits of the dead return and people pray for them?

Should be good for Vita, then.

It was also trivial to run back to Donut Ghost House, clear it again, and get a 'free' save.

Ooooh, you smart aleck.

So really it's like Christmas, where everyone returns home and just plays games and spends as little time as possible talking to one another? Good to see some things are constant in the world. ;P

That's what I meant (roughly three levels even though the exact number varied). And as has been pointed out you could force save whenever you wanted with ghost houses.

My point was surviving never quite was the problem in SMB. Rather getting past difficult parts.

On the other hand, you could also go back and beat a ghost house (or castle, with the trick to re-enter one) any time in order to save whenever you wanted.
And, there were definitely plenty of places where it was easy to build up extra lives with not much effort (in particular the Top Secret Area was more a matter of time than needing any effort at all). And, of course, if playing a 2-player game, players could also freely swap their amount of lives with each other as well, so that a better player could support the survival of a struggling player.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Super Mario World, but, I would have to say that the last Mario where it was actually a significant challenge to make it to the end of the game without getting a game over was Super Mario Bros 3.

That, of course, hasn't stopped them from all being spectacular games, and from selling very well (which is of course what this thread's real focus is).

wait, what has this thread turned into?

Apparently a game design discussion on NSMB2... thread derailed.

I disagree about SMB3, although I will concede that my opinion might be tainted by the fact that I cottoned on to the trick to get a 5-up every three levels *very* quickly. I think I've had a game over on it... maybe twice? In twentysomething years?

I recall sega PR tweeting that the Project Diva series as a whole is at risk if PDf sales are poor (or so it seemed to suggest) fairly recently. Krypton and Sega have rather conflicting visions of Miku's future (and they seriously ruffled some feathers by stating to investors that they wanted to bring Miku to pachinko machines), so it's certainly a possibility.

Fire Emblem is still jumping back into the top 50 even after around 4 months. If it keeps up selling 2-3 k a week it should be over the 500k mark easily by the end of the year.

It will be interesting to see how many Nintendo games will fill up the Top 50 for next week, the obon sales should hopefully give the games a slight increase.

Sure... FW/4thW/LTD

[NDS]Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon (2006-08-21) 39,973 / 8,281 (76,877) / 145,346

[NDS]Rune Factory 2 (2007-12-31) 56,082 / 112,362 / 116,287

[NDS]Rune Factory 3 (2009-10-19) 44,894 / 79,531 / 85,648

[3DS]Rune Factory 4 (2012-07-16) 88,700 / 6,899 (124,394) / 124,394

Best opening, and it's set to surpass the first game. All info according to Garaph, except RF4's.

You also have to consider that Rune Factory 1 sold it's last 20k units over the span of a whole year. RF4 will reach the best series sales within some more weeks, most likely.
