Neil Druckmann: "don’t bet on there being more of ‘Last of Us. This could be it"

Are you only capable of watching young women in a TV show if you want to fuck them or something? Never understood this creepy criticism of Bella Ramsey.

To be fair, she looks like someone started drawing Ellie and stopped halfway through.

It's going to be fun seeing people's reaction to the story. Unlike the videogame, where they were able to wave shiny gameplay toys to distract people from its awfulness, the series won't have that luxury. Will people buy the whole thing devolving into just a nasty revenge story while the heart of the story gets tossed? I have my doubts.

Also, Neil has no trouble lying about what they are working on. So there's that. I just won't take anything he says about upcoming work at face value. It's a meta game he plays so nothing gets spoiled and he keeps the audience guessing. Outside of having fun with speculation, his words cannot be trusted.

https://fandomwire.com/we-always-wa...-us-that-no-one-has-really-called-out-so-far/

I'm sure he's doing the same with Intergalactic:

OH SNAP! So dude even admits to lying about the company's games to throw people off. We can close this thread then. I'd wager think the opposite of whatever he says at this point.

And remasters and needless remakes and the constant yapping about it on their social for years. Im so over it
That tends to happen when you make one of the best games of all time.... The first game made such an impact that it was still relevant enough 10 years later to get a TV show and a sequel, so its not like there isnt demand for more content.

I'm not buying it. I expect TLOU Part 3 will come out on PS5/PS6 eventually.

Me too

But wasn't Part 2 a huge success according to people? Why would they be leaving that kind of money on the table?

Yes it was. Estimated to be at or around 15 million sold.

Sony are probably bringing the hammer down after seeing the decline in sales compared to the first game.

After Intergalactic bombs watch Sony instruct them to make Uncharted 5: the quest for more money.

TLOU2 was the 16th best selling game in the UK and 20th best selling game in Europe in 2024!!!

Why does HBO need another game? If the TV show continues to be a hit, expect a bunch of spinoff TV shows, just like Game of Thrones
The show is complete garbage and the quality of the GoT spin offs have been mixed so far. But better to have the source material ready, we already saw what happened with GoT when ASOI&F was unfinished.

How do you contradict yourself?
Saying she was going to die anyway doesn't mean she wasn't willing to give Joel time to escape lol.
The form she chose to die is the act of heroic action you choose to ignore.

Tess is loyal, not heroic. The woman is an arms dealer, she profits from death. She was doomed, what else was she going to do?

There are actually more selfless examples of loyalty in TLoU2, risky decisions made by healthy, non-infected people- Dina risking herself to save Ellie and vice versa, Manny risking himself to help Abby, Abby risking herself to help Lev and Yara, Owen risking himself to save Abby, and so on.

Point being, TLoU2 is no different from the first game in terms of 'heroism', it's all a matter of very murky perspective.

To be fair, or at least as fair as possible, a lot of people can simply not tolerate or warm up to unattractive protagonists. Male or female. There's a reason most successful movie stars are always handsome/beautiful. Quite often, actual talent may even be secondary. Doesn't have to be just so you want to sleep with them. It's a visual medium, so we seem to want them to be pleasing to our eyes. This superficial bias starts early in school. If you aren't that good looking, the odds are stacked heavily against you to become a lead protagonist in a play. Worse if you are female.

I don't like that we are that way. But that is the reality of human psychology, at least for the majority. People would accept a fugly protagonist like The Penguin, but it being played by Colin Farrell is a big reason it actually worked.

Things are starting to change and I'm seeing a lot of average (or below) looking talented actors making it big. But we aren't fully there yet.

I love Bella Ramsey and her performance, but it doesn't take much mental gymnastics to understand that people not finding her good looking is getting in the way of them appreciating the show. Even my wife couldn't stand her even though she could clearly see her acting chops. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

You are the vast minority with that opinion. It's arguably HBO's biggest show this decade.

Druckmann works as a writer and showrunner on the TV series. Why does he need a game to write? This is not comparable to GOT, where the writer of the books refused to write anymore

So they're only working on the space light saber broad game? That's disappointing. The mighty are falling all around us. At this point it's a shorter list to name which classic devs have not become husks of themselves.

After being mocked endlessly for milking TLOU, this just reads like he's still trying to distance himself - and by extension Naughty Dog - from being just "the last of us guy". That might have worked a decade ago, but he already made his bed. In 2021, he confirmed the outline for Part 3 was done. Then in 2024, in Naughty Dog's own documentary about their own game, he confirmed Part 3 was on its way. In for a penny, in for a pound.

I imagine part of this is trying to push focus off of The Last of Us and onto Intergalactic, but that'll be difficult given initial reactions were... mixed at best. Unless that game is an absolutely monster hit, Sony will be doubling the pressure to deliver TLOUP3 sooner rather than later. HBO won't wait for more material to keep their show going, either, so I'd imagine Naughty Dog's B team is already hard at work putting it together.

Part II is possible closing in 20m. units sold, but for GAF is a Flop, Bomb and whatever.

Truth to be told numbers don't lie, and the game keeps selling.

Nobody said it bomb, it's all in your head, just said won't buy any of his game afrer part 2, i love part 1, and bought part 2 day one, expect same quality, but story of part 2 totally piss me off

If he want to set elie on path of revenge he can use her dead mother as a cause rather than kill off joel in cheap way possible

They should have stopped at 1. If there is ever another TLoU game it needs to be a prequel with Joel and Tommy and they need to bring back Bruce Straley, who is responsible for making the original story what it was in the first place.

Are you only capable of watching young women in a TV show if you want to fuck them or something? Never understood this creepy criticism of Bella Ramsey.
It's called bad casting. There is nothing creepy about critizing her being Ellie. It's not even like a book, where you can take certain liberties with how a character looks, she literally looks nothing like Ellie, not even remotely. Let's just cast Jack Black as Superman while we are at it.

I want a Part III, Ellie needs a redemption story.
Leaving it like this feels unfinished.
I don't see the point. They made her as unlikable as possible so they could push the bullshit Abby story, there is no redeeming her and that's how ND wants it.

Yeah I literally loved the IP and then stopped caring after learning about Joel’s fate. Found TLOU2 for $4 a Black Friday but haven’t even opened the box. Some say the gameplay is great and maybe it is but playing a ND game with no interest in the story makes no sense. And imagine the TV show with just Bella Ramsey and no Pedro Pascal lmao
Same here. It was arguably the crown jewel of Sony's PS3 exclusive games and Joel was just a really well-done character. He was a bad-ass but still relatable and nothing about his character ever felt off (if that makes sense). And then every cutscene I watched from the second game with him in it, his vibe was different. His character didn't have that same energy from the first game, Idk how else to explain it.

Long story short, Joel was TLOU to me and judging by the reaction to my original comment he was TLOU to a lot of other people here too and we're all done with this franchise whether they make another game or not.

yes, joel is TLOU for me, just like how kratos is the god of war, people said they want new character in GOW, but i won't buy any GOW without kratos, even if they revert him back into his former crazy self like greek version, it's still a buy for me

I mean cool I guess? I have standards. Everything about the show was poor.

Because it's a business strategy. People buy the game after experiencing the show. The same reason they are meant to be remastering Horizon to go alongside the TV show. The same reason they Remastered the original games to go alongside the TV show.

He was a white man in the peak of the "we hate white men" era and they had to destroy him. Joel was TLoU, end of story. The first game was peak and will still be considered peak a hundred years from now. The second game is a hostage of the time it was made, both politically and socially, and will always been seen that way. In fact, the entire Sony library from that time to now will be seen this way as well.

That is exactly the point of a classic redemption story arc!

You killed the protagonist in the most STUPID POORLY WRITTEN way possible and then turned likeable girl (new protagonist) into an obnoxious unlikable butch bitch who’s so terrible her lover had to leave her behind

Neil is fishing for compliments and begging.

Brb "but it was sooo good"
Brb "but what happens to Dina/Lev/etc."
Brb blah blah blah

I still think a prequel covering sometime frame after the initial outbreak could be interesting and I'd still love to see more of Bill's story if only a vignette.

Imagine the doggy style scene with Abby, but times 20.

As soon as HBO flashes that bag for a fourth season you KNOW they'll try and get the next game out ASAP. You already have assets from the online game.

Druckmann doesn't even need to direct. Just have a smaller team work on the game. A tight 12-16 hour experience is all we need. Not a 20+ hour monster.

Season 1 (TLOU1) was a huge hit, pretty likely Season 2 & 3 (TLOU2) will be a hit too. HBO pretty likely will want more after it.

If Neil and the showrunner want to continue the show with more seasons beyond what was included in TLOU2 (either by telling what happens after the end, or include Joel flashbacks not included in the game etc) they'll do it.

They don't need to have another game to get the content from, as they did in season 1 they can simply expand or change the story.

Good thing Warner Bros has no influence whatsoever on what games Naughty Dog produces

Druckmann has stated in the past that the TV show would never go past the games. If TLOU tv show continues to be a massive hit, HBO will most likely order spin off shows, which Druckmann could be apart of or not, but he won't continue the story of Ellie past the games

When it comes to TLOU games, I think Naughty Dog is going to wait another 10 or 15 years for another one. Bring back Ellie when she is in her 40s. That character is a lot more compelling than another game with young adult Ellie. She doesn't even have to be the main character either
