I don't think the struggles are very surprising. 3D World is nice but it's a DS game not the next evolution of Mario. Wind Waker HD is cool but it's an up-res'd GameCube game not a new Zelda. Nintendo just isn't delivering.

I'm not asking Nintendo to match the PS4. Heck I'm not asking Nintendo to match the X1. A 7770 GCN class GPU with 2GB of GDDR5. That was my expectation. They didn't meet it so I refuse to support Nintendo's hardware strategy.

I experimented with my Wii U the past week. I never once used the Gamepad. Simply used the Pro controller for everything (obviously I couldnt use the eshop since that requires the pad). It was wonderful. With some firmware tweaking, Nintendo could easily remove the gamepad from the equation and lower the price of the console a good deal. Not saying they will, but just saying that the console experience without the gamepad was really good. The Pro controller in many ways is better than either new next gen controller. But they're Nintendo, which means they'll ride the gamepad into the grave.

THat's retarded, ive been playing deus ex on it and i can't find a single reason to play it in anything other then the gamepad...

I've been reading this sentiment a lot lately on GAF, and no.

Microsoft failed to sell a million units in the first week, a figure the PS4 reached in a single day. They cannot afford to consider this launch as a 'win'.

I hope these Mario numbers means that Nintendo will finally put their 1st party games on sale faster. I love how basically each and every Sony published game hits $10 or $20 at retail at most 6 months after release, but Mario games will be $40 or $60 basically forever.

I dont think this is up to Nintendo, their games retain their price, because not a lot of people trade in Nintendo-games. When they do get traded in, they will sink in price - as witnessed by Metroid Other M.

Well, it appears that even the customers who already own the Wii U have given up on it as well. Those are absolutely abysmal sales for Mario 3D World, only doubling the opening sales of games like Lego City from way back in March. I'm glad as fuck that I'm not a decision maker at Nintendo, because everything is on the table now. Riding this out is becoming less and less of an option given the fact that not even the current console owners are buying games. How can you release Smash Bros and Zelda on this console? Do you sit for a year with basically nothing on the market while you move all post-Kart games to the now necessary successor? I'm glad that these decisions aren't on my shoulders.

The thing is, though, is that Nintendo could withstand another major console failure AFTER this one. All it would take is another Wii situation to bring them back again. I worry that they'll try pulling the same thing next gen, too.

For starters, Nintendo needs to stop thinking with their NCL brain. Let NOA actually work and market their games, while having Reggie or Scott Moffitt entice third parties. They are literally immobilized by HQ waiting for orders, which take so long to come across. Plus with the decline of console gaming in Japan in general, having your head of operations be the only one who can say anything in Kyoto is disastrous. There's no finger on the pulse of community.

Also Nintendo needs to ramp up game production. They've gotten better in recent years, but buying key studios that are willing to churn out good titles for Nintendo, or even throwing money at them to secure games would be better. Just make a deal like Bayonetta 2, except on more titles that gamers would like to buy. The reason the NES/SNES did so well was because the third parties, Capcom, Konami, SQUEENIX, etc, thought it was the best to develop on.
