PlayStation 5 Handheld Will Likely Be Like a Lower-End PS5 Model That Would Need Dedicated Versions of Games

It is possible but very costly and I am concerned by this being quite a bit of an R&D drain when you have other products in the pipeline and before the concept of a new PlayStation handheld has proven its worth.

I think Sony can sell the main console well enough and at a higher MSRP than it used to, but the handheld would be seen like PSVR2 as an add-on and the answer by consumers seems to be do not cross X price barrier”. Doing and selling together or separate an essentially 2 consoles in one handheld sounds nice, but I feel it is a bit impractical and a detour they may not need for PS6 which is next after that.
I was thinking that would be the PS6 design.

I remember there's a rumor of PS6 having two SoC in development. It could be something along those lines for PS6 to be a hybrid console.

This tracks. If we look at the patterns:

PSP = 1.5 times PS1 power
Vita = 1.5 times PS2 power
NuPSP = presumably 1.5 times PS4 power

Gameboy Color =0.9 times NES power
Gameboy Advance = 0.9 times SNES power
DS = 0.9 times N64 power
3DS = 0.9 times Gamecube Power
Switch Handheld Mode = 0.9 times Wii U power

Source is my own detailed technical specification analysis.

Downscaling some 1st party games to 900p-30fps will be alot easier than making dedicated games for a handheld system. The 3rd party will provide ports for the rest of the games like they do with Series S, PC, handhelds like Steamdeck, PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X etc.
An extra sku isnt gonna piss off Developers especially when they will be targeting roughly the same specs between Switch 2, the next Xbox portables and Steamdeck 2 machines.

People saying its gonna be used to play PS4 games or dedicated Portable games made by 1st Party are kinda silly. And if they are right Sony is even dumber than them.
No1 in 2026 is gonna be buying PS4 games or caring about playing them. So theres no reason for them to make that. And they have a portable that streams PS5 games called the PS Portable;
And a making dedicated games for a handheld while Valve, Nintendo and Xbox dont is even dumber. They are barely making enough games for PS5, so thats a no go.

Sharing a PS5 library isnt the hardest thing to do. No1 is expecting the games to run at 4k 60fps on a handheld… 1st party games will downscaled, 3rd party will make the rest. Steamdeck which is released 4-5 years before the next PS handheld is already playing Returnal and Ratchet and Clank, so i expect a 2025/2027 handheld to be able to play them in 800p-1080p with scaling tech too.

People make it out that Steam, MS and Nintendo can make handhelds with a shared library etc but Sony isnt competent enough to do it, they are stuck with a PS4 Portable or a dedicated handheld machine, this narrative is just dumb.

Sony’s next handheld will have a playable offline shared library with PS5/PS6 whether you like it or not or its dead on arrival and waste of time.
It wont have proprietary memory, it will have 2 shoulder buttons and a shared library with modern 3rd party games and current 1st party games. It will be between a Steamdeck 1 and Steamdeck 2 in power. Stronger than. Switch 2, around whatever Xbox is doing

Sounds good.
I think it will be between whatever Steamdeck 1 and Steamdeck 2 will be. And close to Xbox’s portables will be.

I wonder what 1.5 PS4 into a 900p screen with upscaling tech can achieve compared to a ROG or Steamdeck? As they are already playing PS5 games, obviously mostly less than 30fps @1280x800, but with some newly added tech, who knows whats possible in the near future

If they enabled cloud play for Vita, why would the PS Portal not have access to it? Not sure 512gb is enough. Games generally aren't going to be able to run on SD card, so while you could use it to install games, you're still going to need more onboard storage. This is something Nintendo is probably going to run into issues with.
Nintendo's publicly admitted that they can't afford to move to 4k games for a host of reasons, massive game size being a big one.

In reality Steam's handheld could likely play most PS5 games just like it plays every other x86 PC game. Both Steam Deck and PS5 use AMD Zen2 CPUs and play many of the same PC games.
As users build up massive collections of digital-only x86 games across walled off x86 platforms (Steam, PlayStation, Xbox) it's a matter of time before they realize that all of their x86 games could play on all of their x86 systems.
PlayStation consoles built on esoteric HW (PS2 and PS1) designed for gaming have a moral superiority that the AMD based PS4 and PS5 lack.
MS and Windows are despicable across the board but they come out looking like the good guys when Sony's walling off an AMD PC ecosystem and Windows is the 'open' x86 platform.
Sony could make an updated PS2/PS1 handheld that does what the Switch does but at a consistent 60fps with its own ecosystem of exclusive games that don't exist on PC.
PS2 games maxing out at under 10GB means 60GB of storage will hold more that 6 PS2 games or dozens of PS1 games. Smaller games means users can freely download and redownload games quickly.

Portable ps4 pro ish spec device(ps1-4 games through emulation natively) with cloud streaming for ps5/6 games. Compete with switch 2. Portal is showing to be doing numbers despite it being a remote play handheld, and will likely do even better now that they are adding cloud streaming.
