Sony Now Has More Live-Action And TV Shows Planned Than Video Games

  • Sony’s focus has shifted from first-party PS5 titles to live-action adaptations, with more ongoing movie and TV projects than upcoming games.
  • Major adaptations include Horizon New Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima Legends, and Until Dawn, as well as a sequel to Uncharted.
  • With only three PS5 exclusives planned, Sony risks falling behind Xbox, which has more lined up this year.

Sony made several major announcements at CES, revealing adaptations for its popular IPs. Helldivers 2 is getting a live-action movie, though details remain scarce. Columbia Pictures is developing a Horizon New Dawn movie retelling Aloy’s story in collaboration with PlayStation Productions.

Ghost of Tsushima Legends was also revealed as an anime adaptation under Aniplex Studio. It will adapt the game’s Legends mode.

The Until Dawn movie, now in post-production, will tell a new story set in the game’s universe. The Last of Us Season 2 teaser was also revealed, set for release in April. Meanwhile, Gravity Rush is getting a live-action adaptation, though an animated approach seemed more fitting.

Twisted Metal Season 2 has wrapped filming and is expected this year. Sequels for Uncharted and Gran Turismo are also in early development at Columbia Pictures.

However, God of War’s TV adaptation on Prime has faced repeated delays since its 2022 announcement and remains in early production. Similarly, updates on the Days Gone live-action adaptation, reported by Deadline in 2022, are still awaited.

Compared to 7 movie adaptations and multiple other TV shows, Sony only has 3 first-party titles planned for the PlayStation 5. Ghost of Yotei is the only title planned for a 2025 release date, while not much is known about Marvel’s Wolverine and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Shitty clickbait for people eternally butthurt over Sony like TC (and most of NeoGAF).
In reality, they have 10 games announced versus 6 movie/series productions.
Edit: said 8, but I believe that Days Gone and Gravity Rush aren't officially announced yet.
Any Anime shows?
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.
Care nothing for "gaming shows".
CES is not a gaming show, fellow Gamer.

We get this shit every year around this time

They're gonna announce 10 new games this 2024 while Sony just announced no new first party games for the rest of 2024.

and every year Sony has better games.

They've always made a lot of movies, no? It's just another branch for the company.

If you ask me, yes, they should have put out more games so far this gen, but I guess that's because games take way longer to develop nowadays. Also, Concord, I wish those resources would have gone towards more single-player games.

Maybe they pull out a PS3 this gen and end up releasing a lot of stuff near the end of the gen. That would be neat. I just hope it's more of the Stellar Blade and Astrobot kind of stuff and less of the boring cinematic stuff.

Remember the whole "Sony has no first-party games until April 2025, LMAO"?
And remember how this Sony first-party game was just announced 3 months later, released in September 2024 and went on to win GOTY at TGA?
:messenger_tears_of_joy: Yep, it's that time of the year again:

its sony just not playstation wtf.

just tell them to stop making all consumer electronics and make games only.....
they just laid off 900 devs and closed multiple studios. sony should give playstation more money instead of the tv hacks. thats where the talent is.

Lay-offs suck, but SPE can fund itself, it's not like they only release flops as you may be led to believe; this year alone they had Garfield, Bad Boys, It Ends With Us and Venom. You may feel differently about their quality (I only watched Venom, which I didn't like, so I can't speak on the rest), but it's a fact that they were all successful.

"planned" means shit, Horizon was going to be a tv series planned to release on Netflix and that went south quick

It's ridiculous how useless they're, they have a TV/Movie branch and the gaming one and it took how many years to get just one good thing: TLOU and that's HBO doing, right? it wasn't even Sony backing that series 🤦‍♂️

Sony is a corporation, it makes sense if they want to diversify. Also, if you think playstation is too relaxed, blame xbox for not being competitive.

‘Wait to announce things until they are a year or less away and look bad as if you have no projects on the horizon’

If there’s one thing they have it’s Horizon projects.

Honestly, who cares. Sony movies stink, but it’s a completely seperate endeavor from their gaming stuff. If you’re gonna crank out slop might as well use IP owned by the same parent company.

Unlike Xbox, Sony actually own a movie/TV studio.

Now, i am not saying their films are any good; but it's not like these films are going to take away budget for games. These are different departments. You might as well complain about Sony making toys and t-shirts out of their gaming IPs. The quality would be a crapshot at best, but it does make sense to squeeze more revenue out of the IP you already own.

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I feel like the gaming media are doing a lot of hot takes and underestimating Sony and waaaaaaaaay overestimating the strength of Xbox. They keep forgetting the Xbox brand is nearly non-existent in non-US territories.
